Neurotropic pathogens, notably, herpesviruses, have been associated with significant neuropsychiatric effects. As a group, these pathogens can exploit molecular mimicry mechanisms to manipulate the host central nervous system to their advantage. Here, we present a systematic computational approach that may ultimately be used to unravel protein-protein interactions and molecular mimicry processes that have not yet been solved experimentally.

Mitochondria, the cellular powerhouses with bacterial evolutionary origins, play a pivotal role in maintaining neuronal function and cognitive health. Several viruses have developed sophisticated mechanisms to target and disrupt mitochondrial function which contribute to cognitive decline and neurodegeneration. The interplay between viruses and mitochondria might be traced to their co-evolutionary history with bacteria and may reflect ancient interactions that have shaped modern mitochondrial biology.

In many crops, both pollination and biocontrol determine crop yield, whereby the relative importance of the two ecosystem services can be moderated by the landscape context. However, additive and interactive effects of pollination and biocontrol in different landscape contexts are still poorly understood. We examined both ecosystem services in South African macadamia orchards.

Elastography is an emerging diagnostic technique that uses conventional imaging modalities such as sonography or magnetic resonance imaging to quantify tissue stiffness. However, different elastography methods provide different stiffness values, which require calibration using well-characterized phantoms or tissue samples. A comprehensive, fast, and cost-effective elastography technique for phantoms or tissue samples is still lacking.

Article Synopsis
  • - Low pulse pressure (PP) during venoarterial-extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is linked to cardiac dysfunction and increased risk of acute brain injury (ABI), with a specific focus on central nervous system (CNS) issues.
  • - An analysis of 9,807 patients showed that 15% had a low PP (≤10 mm Hg), and these patients experienced ABI more frequently (15% vs. 11%) compared to those with higher PP.
  • - Low PP was independently associated with higher chances of CNS ischemia and brain death, highlighting the importance of monitoring pulse pressure in patients receiving peripheral VA-ECMO.

Background: Early Barrett cancer can be curatively treated by endoscopic resection. The choice of the resection technique, however-endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) or submucosal dissection (ESD)-largely depends on the assumed infiltration depth as judged by the endoscopist. However, the accuracy of endoscopic diagnosis of the degree of cancer infiltration is not known.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how skin pigmentation affects the discrepancy between peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO) and arterial saturation of oxygen (SaO) in patients receiving venovenous-extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO), particularly focusing on race/ethnicity impacts and occult hypoxemia, linked to higher in-hospital mortality.
  • Data from over 13,000 patients showed that Black and Hispanic individuals experienced higher rates of occult hypoxemia compared to White patients, with significant statistical support for these findings.
  • The research highlights the need for careful monitoring of SaO in conjunction with SpO during ECMO, especially for patients with darker skin pigmentation, due to the increased risks

BH3-mimetics represent promising anti-cancer agents in tumors that rely on the anti-apoptotic function of B-Cell Lymphoma 2 (BCL2) proteins, particularly in leukemia and lymphoma cells primed for apoptosis. Mechanistically, BH3-mimetics may displace pro-apoptotic binding partners thus inducing BAX/BAK-mediated mitochondrial permeabilization followed by cytochrome c release, activation of the caspase cascade and apoptosis. Here, we describe a novel mode of caspase-independent cell death (CICD) induced by BH3-mimetics in a subset of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) cells.
