This study aimed to investigate the effect of activated carbon (AC) as an immobilization material in acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation. The AC surface was modified with different physical (orbital shaking and refluxing) and chemical (nitric acid, sodium hydroxide and, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES)) treatments to enhance the biobutanol production by TISTR1461. The effect of surface modification on AC was evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, surface area analyses, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, while the fermented broth was examined by high-performance liquid chromatography.

The strain exhibited tricalcium phosphate solubilizing activity. Its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach.

They consisted of five strains (DMKU-MRY16, DMKU-SK18, DMKU-SK25, DMKU-SK30 and DMKU-SK32) obtained from five different mushrooms, and two strains (ST-224 and 11-14.2) derived from insect frass and soil, respectively.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThirty-three yeasts were isolated from palm oil industrial wastes and traditional fermented foods in Thailand. Based on the analysis of the sequences of the D1/D2 region of the large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (LSU rDNA) and their phenotypic characteristics, they were identified as (11 isolates), (1 isolate), (2 isolates), (1 isolate), (1 isolate), (1 isolate), (2 isolates), (5 isolates), (2 isolates), (1 isolate), and (3 isolates), (1 isolate), and (2 isolates). Seven strains, 4E-1D, 5E-1T and 5E-2D, 8E-1T and 8E-1D, and Fy-12 and Fy-13, showed high lipolytic activity ranged from 5.

A total of 191 yeasts were isolated from 197 samples collected from eight estuarine mangrove forests along four different coastlines of Thailand (Andaman Sea and the East, North and West coasts of the Gulf of Thailand). Of these, 178 isolates were identified as 32 species in 16 genera of Ascomycota, 12 species in nine genera of Basidiomycota, and 13 isolates as potential new species, respectively. Mangroves located along the Andaman Sea coastline had a higher yeast diversity at the species and genera levels than those along the Gulf of Thailand.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA new actinobacterial strain, LCR6-01, was isolated from a lichen sample collected from Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. Its taxonomic position was determined using a polyphasic approach. The strain had morphological characteristics and chemotaxonomic properties identical to those of members of the genus Streptomyces.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA total of 198 yeasts were isolated from 140 samples collected from 7 mangrove forests in 4 provinces of Thailand, and were found to belong to 30 genera, 45 described species and at least 12 undescribed species based on their 26S rRNA (D1/D2 domain) gene sequence. The most prevalent species was Candida tropicalis, followed by Candida pseudolambica and Rhodosporidium paludigena. Lipid accumulation, as determined by Nile red staining, of the isolated yeasts revealed that 69 and 18 strains were positive and strongly positive, respectively, while quantitative analysis of the intracellular lipid accumulated in the latter indicated that 10 of these strains, Pseudozyma tsukubaensis (YWT7-2 and YWT7-3), Rhodotorula sphaerocarpa (YWW6-1 and SFL14-1SF), Saitozyma podzolica (YWT1-1, NS3-3 and NS10-2), Prototheca zopfii var.
