Article Synopsis
  • Chronic liver diseases, particularly metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), are widespread but poorly understood by many, highlighting the need for better awareness and knowledge transfer.
  • An analysis of Google search trends from 2004 to 2021 indicated that interest in MASLD has increased, while interest in its severe form (MASH) and viral hepatitis C has decreased; queries for viral hepatitis B remained stable but focused mainly on vaccination.
  • The search habits show that most users favor simpler, native language terms over complex medical jargon, indicating that public interest is led by non-experts and not significantly influenced by new medical advancements.

Gaucher disease (GD), one of the most common lysosomal disorders, is characterised by clinical heterogeneity. Cardiac involvement is rare and refers to pulmonary hypertension (PH), valvular abnormalities and myocardial infiltrative damage. The aim of this study was to evaluate cardiac involvement in a group of Romanian GD patients.

Background And Aims: Nutritional support (NS) in patients with malignancies and malnutrition improves outcome and treatment tolerance. The underlying mechanisms are not completely understood. We aimed to investigate for the first time the influence of an early individualized NS in newly diagnosed patients with gastrointestinal/hepato-pancreatic malignancies and malnutrition on DNA damage, oxidative stress and subclinical inflammation.

Background And Aims: Fibrosis progression (FP) after liver transplantation (LT) increases morbidity and mortality. Biomarkers are needed for early prediction of FP. A recipient's seven-gene cirrhosis risk score (CRS) has been associated with FP, especially in non-transplant cohorts.

Purpose: Osteopathy/osteoporosis in Gaucher disease type 1 (GD1) shows variable responses to enzyme replacement therapy (ERT); the pathogenesis is incompletely understood. We aimed to investigate the effects of several gene variants on bone mineral density (BMD) and serum markers of bone metabolism in GD1.

Patients And Methods: Fifty adult Caucasian patients with GD1/117 controls were genotyped for gene variants in the osteoprotegerin (TNFRSF11B; OPG), estrogen receptor alpha, calcitonin receptor (CALCR), and vitamin D receptor (VDR) genes.

Acromegalic patients display a distinct neuropsychological profile and suffer from chronic physical complaints. We aimed to investigate in more detail these aspects in acromegalic patients, dependent on influencing factors like disease activity, age, sex, chronic medication, surgery, pituitary radiation, pituitary insufficiency and comorbidities. Cross sectional, multicentric.

Background And Aim: Patients with Gaucher disease type 1 (GD1) show an altered lipid profile and a certain degree of insulin resistance, which might contribute to cholelithiasis (CL) and could possibly be associated with ABCG5/ABCG8 gene variants. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of CL in Caucasian adult patients with GD1 and the possible risk factors, including gene variants of the ABCG5/ABCG8 genes.

Methods: 61 Caucasian patients with GD1 (38 female/23male), aged 18-62 years and 61 healthy subjects matched for age, gender and BMI, without CL, for comparison of lipid profiles.

Background. Glycogen storage disease type III (GSDIII) is a rare metabolic disorder with autosomal recessive inheritance, caused by deficiency of the glycogen debranching enzyme. There is a high phenotypic variability due to different mutations in the AGL gene.

Background: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of long-term mortality after liver transplantation (LT). Life long immunosuppression harbors the risk of metabolic alterations. We aimed to analyze the impact of calcineurin (CNI)-only containing regimen (group A) compared to mTOR-containing regimen (group B) on lipid and carbohydrate metabolism.

Background: Expensive pharmaceuticals are a major reason for cost intensive health care systems. Long-term immunosuppressive therapy plays a relevant role after organ transplantation. Patents of original drugs have expired and cheaper products are available.

Background: Chronic hepatitis C is a major cause of liver-associated mortality caused by decompensated cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. With the approval of sofosbuvir, therapeutic efficacy has markedly increased. Early changes in non-invasive biomarkers of liver fibrosis under effective antiviral therapy are widely unknown.

Cholangiocellular carcinoma (CCA) is a primary hepatic malignancy derived from cholangiocytes. The prognosis for CCA patients is very poor and conventional chemotherapy has been proven ineffective in improving long‑term patient survival rates. Organic cation transporters (OCTs) mediate the transport of a broad spectrum of endogenous substrates and the detoxification of xenobiotics.

Background: Dyslipidemia in Gaucher disease includes reduced total, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (C). No prospective analysis of lipid profile changes in treatment-naïve patients under enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) is available.

Methods: We analyzed lipid profile changes during ERT in a prospective controlled manner.

Background: Organic cation transporters (OCT) are responsible for the uptake and intracellular inactivation of a broad spectrum of endogenous substrates and detoxification of xenobiotics and chemotherapeutics. The transporters became pharmaceutically interesting, because OCTs are determinants of the cytotoxicity of platin derivates and the transport activity has been shown to correlate with the sensitivity of tumors towards tyrosine kinase inhibitors. No data exist about the relevance of OCTs in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Background: NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) is considered the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome (MS). We aimed to analyze lipid, carbohydrate, and iron metabolism in NASH.

Patients, Methods: 37 patients with MS (17 M/20 F, 51+/-15 years), elevated transaminases; 25 patients had histologically proven NASH (NAS score≥5), 12 patients had toxic background (nonNASH).

Background: Long term immunosuppression and therapy of acute rejections result in a 20-120-fold increased risk to develop Non Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Since immunosuppressive therapy and immunological disorders are major risk factors for the development of NHL in the non-transplant population we aimed to analyze risk factors for PTLD in our cohort of liver transplanted (LT) patients.

Methods: We analyzed retrospectively 431 patients liver transplanted between 1998 and 2008.

Background: Classic 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21HD) presents some traits of the metabolic syndrome.

Aim: To characterize discrete alterations of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism in children and young adults with classic 21HD, which could predict early atherogenesis.

Patients And Methods: Twenty-seven Caucasian patients with classic 21HD (4-31 years); 27 sex-, age- and BMI-matched controls.

Background/aim: To present clinical and genetic characteristics of all Romanian patients with Gaucher disease type 1, in whom specific diagnosis has been confirmed by enzymatic and molecular methods and to analyze their outcome with and without enzymatic replacement therapy (ERT).

Patients, Methods: There are fifty patients (F/M - 1.63/1) with Gaucher disease type 1.

Objective: It remains controversial if glucocorticoid replacement therapy impairs bone mineral density (BMD) in young patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency. We aimed to analyze the impact of treatment variables, phenotype and genotype on BMD and bone metabolism in these patients.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Patients: Forty-four patients with coGHD (34 M; 9.7 +/- 4.

We evaluated the safety and efficacy of an escalating dose regimen of pegylated interferon alpha-2a (PEG-IFN(alpha-2a)) and ribavirin in the early phase of recurrent hepatitis C after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). In this prospective study, 26 patients transplanted for hepatitis C virus cirrhosis with recurrent hepatitis C were treated 3.4 +/- 3.
