Article Synopsis
  • * Research involved assessing VOC levels from 10 firms in Shandong Province, China, revealing that plastic packaging enterprises emitted the highest unorganized VOCs, mainly consisting of oxygenated compounds, alkanes, and halocarbons.
  • * While the cancer risk from VOC exposure was deemed low, there were notable non-carcinogenic health risks linked to certain chemicals, emphasizing the need for improved work conditions and systematic measures to reduce VOC impacts.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) significantly contribute to ozone pollution formation, and many VOCs are known to be harmful to human health. Plastic has become an indispensable material in various industries and daily use scenarios, yet the VOC emissions and associated health risks in the plastic manufacturing industry have received limited attention. In this study, we conducted sampling in three typical plastic manufacturing factories to analyze the emission characteristics of VOCs, ozone formation potential (OFP), and health risks for workers.

Nighttime ozone enhancement (NOE) can increase the oxidation capacity of the atmosphere by stimulating nitrate radical formation and subsequently facilitating the formation of secondary pollutants, thereby affecting air quality in the following days. Previous studies have demonstrated that when nocturnal ozone (O) concentrations exceed 80 μg/m, it leads to water loss and reduction of plant yields. In this study, the characteristics and mechanisms of NOE over Shandong Province as well as its 16 cities were analyzed based on observed hourly O concentrations from 2020 to 2022.
