Photodamage to the outer segments of photoreceptor cells and their impaired utilization by retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells contribute to the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) leading to blindness. Degeneration of photoreceptor cells and RPE cells is triggered by reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by photochemical reactions involving bisretinoids, by-products of the visual cycle, which accumulate in photoreceptor discs and lipofuscin granules of RPE. Carotenoids, natural antioxidants with high potential efficacy against a wide range of ROS, may protect against the cytotoxic properties of lipofuscin.

Different ion channels may influence the process of neurodegeneration. The peptides Ms 9a-1 and APHC3 can modulate the function of TRPA1 and TRPV1 channels, and we evaluated their cytoprotective effects in differentiated to dopaminergic neuron-like SH-SY5Y cells.

Lipofuscin serves as a source of various cytotoxic effects linked with oxidative stress. Several age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration of the retina, as well as some severe inherited eye pathologies, are accompanied by a significant increase in lipofuscin granule concentration.

First, DNA pH sensors relied on complex intermolecular scaffolds. Here, we used a simple unimolecular dual-labeled iM scaffold and minimized it by replacing the redundant loop nucleosides with abasic or alkyl linkers.

Since several social important diseases are accompanied by alterations in RBC aggregation and deformability, it is important to develop a diagnostic parameter of RBC membrane structural integrity and stability. In this work, we propose membrane microviscosity assessed by time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy of the lipophilic PKH26 fluorescent probe as a diagnostic parameter.

Yet, the toolkit of characterized carotenoproteins is rather limited: such proteins are either too specific binders of only few different carotenoids, or their ability to transfer carotenoids to various acceptor systems is unknown. Here, by focusing on a recently characterized recombinant ~27-kDa Carotenoid-Binding Protein from Bombyx mori (BmCBP) [Slonimskiy et al.

STARD3 and its homologs in invertebrates are known to bind and transport carotenoids, but this lacks structural elucidation. Here, we report high-resolution crystal structures of the apo- and zeaxanthin (ZEA)-bound carotenoid-binding protein from silkworm Bombyx mori (BmCBP).

The morphology and metabolism of grown under spaceflight (SF) or combined spaceflight and magnetic force (SF + MF) conditions were compared with ground cultivated bacteria grown under standard (control) or magnetic force (MF) conditions. SF, SF + MF, and MF conditions provided the up-regulation of Ag43 auto-transporter and cell auto-aggregation.

Despite the multitude of high-quality papers describing clinical trials of different vaccine products, basic detailed data on general toxicity, reproductive toxicity, immunogenicity, protective efficacy and durability of immune response in animal models are scarce. Here, we developed a β-propiolactone-inactivated whole virion vaccine CoviVac and assessed its safety, protective efficacy, immunogenicity and stability of the immune response in rodents and non-human primates.

In general, these scaffolds provide inert three-dimensional (3D) surfaces supporting cell growth. However, some scaffolds can affect the phenotype of cultured cells, especially, adherent stromal cells, such as fibroblasts.

These zones are the sites of restoration of brain function after injury. Bioengineered scaffolds introduced in the damaged loci were shown to support neurogenesis to the injury area, thus representing a strategy to treat acute neurodegeneration.

Biocompatible scaffolds with optimized properties improve the survival of transplanted neural cells and differentiation of progenitor cells into the desired types of neurons. View Article and Find Full Text PDFSilk fibroin is a promising biomaterial for tissue engineering due to its valuable mechanical and biological properties. However, being a natural product and a protein, it lacks the processability and uniform quality of an advanced synthetic material. Here we propose a way to overcome this contradiction using novel fibroin photocrosslinkable derivative (FBMA).

One of the approaches, treatment with polymeric microcarriers, was shown to promote tissue regeneration in various models of wound healing. The effects of such an approach are attributed to transferred cells with polymeric microparticles functioning merely as inert scaffolds.
