Phage φ29 and related bacteriophages are currently the smallest known tailed viruses infecting various representatives of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. They are characterised by genomic content features and distinctive properties that are unique among known tailed phages; their characteristics include protein primer-driven replication and a packaging process characteristic of this group. Searches conducted using public genomic databases revealed in excess of 2000 entries, including bacteriophages, phage plasmids and sequences identified as being archaeal that share the characteristic features of phage φ29.

Capsular polysaccharide (CPS) is a heteroglycan that coats the cell surface of most isolates of the important Gram-negative bacterial pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii. Strain MAR 15-4076, a clinical isolate recovered in Russia in 2015, was found to carry the KL129 sequence at the CPS biosynthesis K locus. The CPS was isolated from the strain and studied by sugar analysis, Smith degradation, one- and two-dimensional H and C NMR spectroscopy.

Two novel virulent phages of the genus infecting , a significant nosocomial pathogen, have been isolated and studied. In this study, several different depolymerases encoded in the prophage regions of genomes have been bioinformatically predicted and recombinantly produced. The identified depolymerases possessed multi-domain structures and were identical or closely homologous to various proteins encoded in other genomes. This means that prophage-derived depolymerases are widespread, and different bacterial genomes can be the source of proteins with polysaccharide-degrading activities.
