The terpolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) with acrylic acid and triethylene glycol methacrylate were synthesized with more than 90% yield by radical copolymerization in ethanol from monomeric mixtures of different molar composition (98:2:2, 95:5: 2 and 98:2:5) and their monomer composition, absolute molecular masses and hydrodynamic radii in aqueous media were determined. Using the MTT test, these terpolymers were established to be low toxic for non-tumor Vero cells and HeLa tumor cells. Polymer compositions of hydrophobic dye methyl pheophorbide a (MPP) based on studied terpolymers and linear polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were obtained and characterized in water solution.

Oxidative stress (OS) plays a key role in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in three major ways: reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced reduction of nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, ROS-induced inflammation and ROS-induced mitochondrial dysfunction. Oxidation of lipid molecules under the action of ROS leads to damage to membrane structures, changes the functioning of membrane-bound enzymes, and impairs membrane permeability and stability. An increase in OS results in the occurrence of endothelial dysfunction and drug tolerance, side effects, requiring discontinuation of drugs.

Using a novel method of -substituted succinimide ring opening, new -hydroxybutanamide derivatives were synthesized. These compounds were evaluated for their ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their cytotoxicity. The iodoaniline derivative of -hydroxy--phenylbutanediamide showed the inhibition of MMP-2, MMP-9, and MMP-14 with an IC of 1-1.

A series of novel water-soluble salts of benzofuroxans was achieved via aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction of 4,6-dichloro-5-nitrobenzofuroxan with various amines. The salts obtained showed good effectiveness of the pre-sowing treatment of seeds of agricultural crops at concentrations of 20-40 mmol. In some cases, the seed treatment with salts leads not only to improved seed germination, but also to the suppression of microflora growth.

In the case of various pathologies, an imbalance between ROS generation and the endogenous AOS can be observed, which leads to excessive ROS accumulation, intensification of LPO processes, and oxidative stress. For the prevention of diseases associated with oxidative stress, drugs with antioxidant activity can be used. The cytotoxic, antioxidant, and NO-donor properties of the new hybrid compound B6NO (di(3-hydroxy-4,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-methylpyridinium) salt of 2-(nitrooxy)butanedioic acid) were studied.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently estimated as the most prevalent chronic liver disease in all age groups. An increasing body of evidence obtained in experimental and clinical data indicates that oxidative stress is the most important pathogenic factor in the development of NAFLD. The study aimed to investigate the impact of α-lipoic acid (LA), widely used as an antioxidant, on the effects of a hypercaloric choline-deficient diet.

Amino acids tyrosine (Tyr) and tryptophan (Trp) play a significant role in the regulation of energy metabolism, locomotor activity, and eating behavior. We studied the possibility of modulating these processes in obesity by increasing the pool of Tyr and Trp in the experimental diet. As a model of obesity, we used Wistar rats fed a diet with an excess specific energy value (HFCD) for 64 days.

Article Synopsis
  • The iron nitrosyl complex with 2-aminothiophenyl ligand reduces viability and induces cell death in HeLa cells, displaying features typical of apoptosis.
  • At the concentration causing half-maximal inhibition (IC50), it decreases the levels of the NF-κB p65 protein and the expression of specific NF-κB target genes like interleukin-8 and BIRC3.
  • However, it does not affect the mRNA levels of interleukin-6 or BIRC2, indicating selective suppression of certain NF-κB-related genes associated with apoptosis.
