Article Synopsis
  • A(H5Nx) avian influenza viruses are widespread and evolving, with a notable emergence of highly pathogenic A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b reassortant viruses since 2020.
  • Some of these viruses, particularly those isolated from mammals, carry a mutation (E627K) in the PB2 protein that enables adaptation to mammalian cells.
  • Recent findings from Russia reveal a highly pathogenic A(H5N1) virus with the E627K mutation that shows increased virulence in mice and limited airborne transmission in ferrets, underscoring the need for ongoing surveillance to mitigate pandemic risks.

The novel coronavirus disease COVID-19 has become one of the most socially significant infections. One of the main models for COVID-19 pathogenesis study and anti-COVID-19 drug development is laboratory animals sensitive to the virus. Herein, we report SARS-CoV-2 infection in novel transgenic mice conditionally expressing human ACE2 (hACE2), with a focus on viral distribution after intranasal inoculation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study reports the isolation of the highly pathogenic influenza A(H5N8) virus from a poultry worker in Astrakhan, Russia, during a poultry outbreak in December 2020.
  • Seven poultry workers' nasopharyngeal swabs tested positive for the virus, with one sample confirmed through RT-PCR and sequencing.
  • The findings raise public health concerns due to the sporadic nature of human infections with the influenza A(H5N8) virus.
