Geohazard Identification in Underground Mines: A Mobile App.

Mining is a critical industry that provides essential minerals and resources for modern society. Despite its benefits, the industry is also recognized as one of the most dangerous occupations, with geotechnical hazards being a primary concern. This study introduces the hazard recognition in underground mines application (HUMApp), a mobile application developed to enhance safety within underground mines by efficiently identifying geotechnical hazards, specifically focusing on roof falls.

Transnational Healthcare Practices Among Migrants: A Concept Analysis.

Aims: To present a conceptual definition of transnational healthcare in the context of migrant older adults.

Design: This article follows the Walker and Avant concept analysis framework to conduct an in-depth analysis of transnational healthcare.

Methods: Databases were searched for scholarly articles using keywords associated with transnational healthcare.

Transitions of care: An aerodigestive provider assessment survey.

Objective: To create, validate, and apply an aerodigestive provider assessment survey.

Methods: A survey assessing provider knowledge and current practice in the transition of patients with chronic aerodigestive disorders from pediatric to adult care was drafted by a multidisciplinary expert panel. Once agreement of the initial survey items was obtained, the survey was distributed to a national multidisciplinary panel of aerodigestive experts for review.

Pulmonary artery vasodilators for treatment of pulmonary hypertension complicating fibrosing mediastinitis.

Fibrosing mediastinitis (FM) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by sclerosing fibrosis of mediastinal structures. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) may complicate the course of the disease and can contribute significantly to the morbidity of FM. Due to the rarity and complexity of the disease, evidence-based guidelines are not currently available, and the optimal treatment approach is unknown.

Right Ventricular Clot in Transit in a Patient with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pneumonia Successfully Treated with Thrombolytics.

Background: Right heart thrombus or clot in transit is a rare venous thromboembolism (VTE) with high mortality. COVID-19 infection has been associated with increased risk of such events. We present the case of a 63-year-old man with no traditional VTE risk factors who was diagnosed with a clot in transit three weeks after diagnosis of COVID-19.

Chylopericardium due to Subclavian Vein Thrombosis in the Setting of Protein S Deficiency.

Background: Chylopericardium is the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the pericardial cavity. It can be idiopathic or secondary to trauma, cardiothoracic surgery, neoplasm, radiation, tuberculosis, lymphatic duct dysfunction, thrombosis, or other causes. We present a case of chylopericardium due to subclavian vein thrombosis in a patient with protein S deficiency.

The Impact of Cardiology Consultation on Medical Intensive Care Unit Patients with Elevated Troponin Levels.

Background: Cardiac troponin (cTn) is mainly used to diagnose acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, cTn can also be elevated in critically ill patients secondary to demand ischemia or myocardial injury. The impact of cardiology consultation on the clinical outcomes of patients admitted to medical intensive care unit (ICU) with elevated cTn is unclear.

Background: Poor pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI) technique is prevalent, which will diminish treatment gains. In a two-visit study, two novel pMDI training devices with feedback mechanisms; Trainhaler (THR) and Flo-Tone CR (FTCR), were evaluated alongside the traditional verbal inhaler training (VT) in asthma outpatients.

Methods: On visit 1, 18-60 year-old asthmatics with incorrect pMDI use [including peak inhalation flow (PIF) >60 L/min] signed consent and baseline pMDI technique, lung function, asthma control and quality-of-life were measured.

In February 2016, the camp of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), in Kidal, was attacked and many people were wounded and killed. This study aims to determine the nature of extremity traumas and to describe their treatment. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study of extremity traumas in the victims of the attack on the camp of MINIUSMA in Kidal.

Liver Transplantation for Hepatitis B in Early Adulthood: Analysis of the United Network for Organ Sharing Database.

Background: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has a mild course in most children that may delay initiation of treatment even when indicated. Unfortunately, a small number of cases can progress rapidly to cirrhosis, which may require liver transplantation (LT) in early adulthood. The aim of this study was to assess the characteristics of HBV-positive young adults who received LT and to evaluate post-transplant outcomes including patient and graft survival and differences between pre- and post-implementation of Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) prioritization.

Open Anterior Dislocation of the Hip in Togo.

Anterior traumatic dislocations of the hip are much less common than posterior dislocations. To date, 14 cases of open anterior dislocation of the hip associated with such injuries, acetabular and femoral head fractures and femoral vascular and nerve damage have been reported. We present a case of a 23-year-old male who sustained open anterior dislocation of the hip with ipsilateral fracture of the greater trochanter after an accident on the public highway.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus transmission in a low-prevalence healthcare setting.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the nosocomial transmission of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and the predictive role of colonization pressure (CP) in a low-prevalence healthcare setting.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of MRSA infection rates from 2004 to 2009 at the Saudi Aramco Dhahran Health Center, Saudi Arabia, was performed. MRSA patient-days, susceptible patient-days, nosocomial incidence and CP were calculated for each month from January 2008 to December 2009.

Profile of viral hepatitis A, B, and C in a Saudi Arabian hospital.

Background: The objective of the study was to investigate the pattern and epidemiology of viral hepatitis among patients of the Saudi Aramco Medical Services Organization (SAMSO) in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

Material/methods: A retrospective analysis of the reported cases of viral hepatitis was conducted from January 2000 to June 2005.

Results: A total of 1214 patients with viral hepatitis were identified during the study period.

Breath-actuated inhalers: comparison of terbutaline Turbohaler with salbutamol Rotahaler.

Two breath-actuated inhalers, the Turbohaler and the Rotahaler, were compared in 24 patients with chronic asthma using an open, cross-over study design. Patients were treated with terbutaline (500 micrograms) and salbutamol (400 micrograms) four times daily, each trial period lasting three weeks. Mean morning peak expiratory flow (PEF) values were higher during Turbohaler treatment, but were similar 15 min after inhaler use.

[Metastatic skipping in the bone marrow (skip metastases) in osteosarcoma. Frequency and clinical implications?].

The existence of skip metastases in osteosarcoma, a particular type of spread of this tumor, has been questioned. We have reviewed 229 cases of osteosarcomas and found two instances of skip metastases. In both the histological appearance of the metastatic forms and the primary tumor were identical.

Paradoxical lipodystrophic changes due to conventional bovine and highly purified porcine/bovine insulins.

A 78-year-old woman developed marked insulin lipoatrophy due to conventional bovine insulin injected into the upper limbs. Changing to a combination of highly purified porcine/bovine insulins injected into the lower limbs resulted in the opposite effect, namely insulin-induced lipohypertrophy. Use was then made of this effect by injecting the highly purified insulins into the atrophied upper limb injection sites with resultant improvement in these wasted areas over the next 10 months.

Discrimination of phantom hand sensations elicited by afferent electrical nerve stimulation in below-elbow amputees.

The necessity for a sensory feedback system that would enhance patient acceptability of motorized hand prostheses is now generally acknowledged. Afferent electrical stimulation of the nerves in the amputation stump can convey sensory feedback from prostheses with the advantage of eliciting sensations in the phantom image of the lost hand. Experiments with percutaneous nerve stimulation of the amputation stump in below-elbow amputees showed that with stable electrode conditions, amplitude modulated stimulation was better than frequency modulated stimulation in terms of accuracy, delay, and transinformation both with intermittent and uninterrupted stimulation.
