Intrapartum and postpartum analgesia for women maintained on buprenorphine during pregnancy.

Objective: To determine whether buprenorphine maintenance alters intrapartum or postpartum pain or medication requirements.

Methods: Sixty three patients treated with buprenorphine for opioid dependence during pregnancy (vaginal n = 44; cesarean n = 19) were matched retrospectively to control women. Analgesic medication and pain scores (0-10) were extracted from the medical record.

Widespread distribution of tetracycline resistance genes in a confined animal feeding facility.

We sought to determine the distribution of resistance and the tetracycline resistance genes among bacteria isolated from a swine confined animal feeding facility where tetracycline-containing feed had been in use for over 20 years. Samples collected from feed, hogs, hog houses, waste lagoon, soil, surface water and well water were screened for the presence of (a) resistant Escherichia coli and enterococci and (b) tetracycline-resistant strains of all species. Genomic DNA was extracted from the latter strain collection and fragments from 16S rDNA and ten tetracycline resistance genes (tetA, tetB, tetC, tetE, tetH, tetL, tetM, tetS, tetT and rumB) were polymerase chain reaction-amplified and a partial nucleotide sequence was obtained.

Fifteen-year study of the changing epidemiology of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Purpose: The study's purpose was to elucidate the evolutionary, microbiologic, and clinical characteristics of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections.

Methods: MRSA cases from military medical facilities in San Diego, from 1990 to 2004, were evaluated and categorized as community-acquired or nosocomial. Sequence type, staphylococcal chromosomal cassette gene type, and Panton-Valentine leukocidin gene status were determined for a subset of isolates.

Multilocus sequence typing versus pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for characterization of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli isolates.

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli strains are emerging pathogens. Molecular typing of ESBL-producing E. coli is useful for surveillance purposes, to monitor outbreaks and track nosocomial spread.
