In order to achieve high yield of fungal protease in a very cost effective way and to meet its increased market demand, current study deals with the screening of various agro-wastes as carbon source for the production of protease from Rhizopus oryzae (SN5)/NCIM-1447 under solid state fermentation. Substrates and culture parameters such as wheat bran, soybean meal, black-gram husk, rice husk, mixture of wheat bran, soybean meal, nitrogen sources, pH, temperature and incubation time were first optimized with one factor at time strategy and then EVOP factorial and yield of alkaline protease was achieved 412.8 U/gds at 28 °C and pH = 6 after 72 h of fermentation taking wheat bran and soybean as a substrate in 4:1 ratio.

Salvaging recurrent scleral buckle exposure with autologous periosteal patch graft.

Purpose: To describe a surgical technique for salvaging recurrent exposure of scleral buckle.

Methods: A patient, treated for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with scleral buckle, presented with exposed uninfected buckle 3 weeks after the initial surgery. We tried to cover the exposure twice with conjunctivoplasty and once with scleral patch graft with amniotic membrane transplantation, but each one of them failed.

Host plant induced variation in gut bacteria of Helicoverpa armigera.

Helicoverpa are important polyphagous agricultural insect pests and they have a worldwide distribution. In this study, we report the bacterial community structure in the midgut of fifth instar larvae of Helicoverpa armigera, a species prevalent in the India, China, South Asia, South East Asia, Southern & Eastern Africa and Australia. Using culturable techniques, we isolated and identified members of Bacillus firmus, Bacillus niabense, Paenibacillus jamilae, Cellulomonas variformis, Acinetobacter schindleri, Micrococcus yunnanesis, Enterobacter sp.

Post-traumatic subconjunctival dislocation of an intraocular lens (pseudophacocele) is a rare but serious complication following cataract surgery. All the previously reported cases were managed by removal of the IOL rendering the eye aphakic. We report a case of traumatic pseudophacocele which was successfully managed by an IOL exchange.

Programme planning and screening strategy in retinopathy of prematurity.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is one of the major emerging causes of childhood blindness. A well organised screening strategy and timely intervention can to a large extent prevent blindness due to ROP. This communication proposes a screening strategy and management plan to develop a model for the care of babies with ROP.

Outcome and number of cataract surgeries in India: policy issues for blindness control.

Purpose: To assess what impact attention to quality of cataract surgery and postoperative follow up can have on cataract blindness in India, and to estimate the number of surgeries needed to eliminate cataract blindness in India.

Methods: In a population-based sample of 5268 persons in two rural areas in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, data on the visual outcome of cataract surgery were obtained on 129 eyes of 106 persons operated previously. These were compared with the visual outcome of cataract surgery performed during 1999 in 2394 eyes of 2213 persons at two new rural eye centres set up in these areas that pay particular attention to the quality of eye care.

Ethical values in health care: an Indian-Swedish co-operation.

The aim of this report is to present an example of a multidisciplinary Indian-Swedish co-operation on ethics in health care. It is based on a conference held in Asia Plateau, Panchgani, Maharasthra, India in 1998. The emphasis is on ethical values that are important for consumers of health care and professionals, and also for different cultures in developed and developing countries.
