Improvement of hearing in ossiculoplasty depends on the efficiency of the methods to reestablish the ossicular continuity and the connection with the tympanic membrane. While various prostheses have been used to bridge the ossieular defect, we have used autogenous bone (incus remnant & cortical bone ) and autogenous cartilage (frugal & conchal) for reconstruction of ossicular continuity.Hearing results at I8 months follow up have been fairly good i.

(R)- and (S)-1-chloro-3-(1-naphthyloxy)-2-propanol are intermediates in the synthesis of beta-adrenergic blocking agents and antihypertensive drugs such as propranolol and nadoxolol. Herein, improvement in the preparation of racemic 1-chloro-3-(1-naphthyloxy)-2-propanol generated from 1-naphthol and epichlorohydrin are reported. In addition, kinetic resolution studies have been conducted to obtain both (R) and (S)-1-chloro-3-(1-naphthyloxy)-2-propanol.

Objective: To determine the efficacy of a cost-effective multi-site intradermal regimen with purified chick embryo cell vaccine (PCECV, Rabipur) in preventing rabies in people bitten by confirmed rabid dogs.

Methods: Thirty-two people of different age groups who were severely bitten by confirmed rabid dogs were immunized with PCECV using the WHO recommended multi-site intradermal regimen of 0.1 mL of vaccine at eight sites on day 0, at four sites on day 7, and at one site each on days 28 and 90.

A series of nineteen substituted 1,2,3,4,6,7,12,12a-octahydropyrazino[2',1':6,1]pyrido[3, 4-b]indoles analogues of neuroleptic drug, Centbutindole have been studied using quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis. The derived models display good fits to the experimental data (r>or=0.75) having good predictive power (r(cv)>or=0.

Background: The purpose of the present retrospective study was to evaluate the results of open reduction and internal fixation of delayed unions and nonunions of fractures of the distal part of the humerus.

Methods: Between 1976 and 2001, fifty-two patients with a delayed union (thirteen patients) or nonunion (thirty-nine patients) of the distal part of the humerus were treated with open reduction and internal fixation along with selective elbow joint arthrolysis and bone-grafting. The average time to presentation was eighteen months (range, two to 192 months) after the injury.

Although recurrent primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) after liver transplantation (LT) has been reported, the full spectrum of changes and progression to fibrosis and cirrhosis is not yet established. We performed a detailed retrospective clinicopathologic analysis of 43 patients who underwent LT for PBC. Eight patients (18.

We have found that EEF1A2, the gene encoding protein elongation factor EEF1A2 (also known as eEF-1 alpha 2), is amplified in 25% of primary ovarian tumors and is highly expressed in approximately 30% of ovarian tumors and established cell lines. We have also demonstrated that EEF1A2 has oncogenic properties: it enhances focus formation, allows anchorage-independent growth and decreases the doubling time of rodent fibroblasts. In addition, EEF1A2 expression made NIH3T3 fibroblasts tumorigenic and increased the growth rate of ES-2 ovarian carcinoma cells xenografted in nude mice.

We report the first example of enantioselective and diastereoselective aldehyde additions of propargyl acetate to aldehydes using the methodology recently reported from our laboratories. Subsequent O-silyl protection, Pd-catalyzed isomerization, AcOH addition, and hydrolysis result in optically active gamma-hydroxy alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes as powerful building blocks. Reaction: see text.

Background: Post-exposure prophylaxis for rabies with cell culture vaccines by the conventional intramuscular regimen is very expensive. The World Health Organization has advocated two cost-effective intradermal regimens with cell culture vaccines for use in developing countries. We evaluated these two regimens--the 2-site and the 8-site regimens--in terms of immunogenicity, safety and tolerance in people with category I exposure to rabies.

Background: Trabeculectomy remains the mainstay of therapy for advanced glaucoma in Nigeria due to the unavailability and expense of topical therapy. Little is known of the medium- to long-term outcomes of trabeculectomy in West Africa. Purpose To retrospectively assess outcomes, in terms of lowering of the intraocular pressure and preserving the visual acuity, and the safety of trabeculectomy in patients with advanced glaucoma in Nigeria.

Here, we report the immunomodulating potential of N-palmitoyl-amino-ethyl-rigin amide (PR) and N-cholestanyl-amino-ethyl-rigin amide (CR), the two new structural analogs of rigin (an IgG-derived tetrapeptide). Their activity profiles are compared with native tuftsin (NT) and/or N-palmitoyl-amino-ethyl-tuftsin amide (PT) taken as positive control. To explore the possibility of their use as targeting molecules, they are incorporated into the liposome bilayer and, subsequently, interacted with macrophages in an in vitro study.

The ability to gain entry and resist the antimicrobial intracellular environment of mammalian cells is an essential virulence property of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A purified recombinant protein expressed by a 1362 bp locus (mce1) in the M. tuberculosis genome promoted uptake into HeLa cells of polystyrene latex microspheres coated with the protein.

Although recurrence of viral hepatitis in liver transplants is common, data comparing recurrent hepatitis B (HB), hepatitis C (HC), and co-existing dual hepatitis B and C (HB&C) are sparse. Posttransplantation liver biopsies, along with molecular, serological, immunohistochemical, and clinical data from 27 patients with pretransplantation diagnosis of chronic viral hepatitis, were reviewed. The patients were placed into 4 groups: Group I, with pretransplantation HB (n = 8); group II, with pretransplantation HC (n = 10); group III with pretransplantation HC and anti-HB surface or core antibody (n = 4); and group IV, with pretransplantation HB&C (n = 5).

The revised standard for sampling effluent air from stacks and ducts of the nuclear industry places limits on the non-uniformity of velocity and contaminant profiles at the sampling location; namely, the coefficients of variation must not exceed 20% over an area that encompasses at least the center 2/3 of the cross sectional area. Tests were conducted to characterize the degree of mixing at downstream locations as affected by several types of flow disturbances, including 90 degree elbows and commercial static mixing devices. Flow straighteners were incorporated into the ducting upstream of the mixer to be tested to simulate the dampening of flow turbulence that might occur because of upstream HEPA filters.

Mycobacteria belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex have the ability to invade and replicate in non-phagocytic cells, an event that requires the presence of bacterial surface components capable of triggering a cell response and the subsequent internalization of the microorganism. In this study, we report the sequencing of the mycobacterial cell entry gene (mce) of Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and the generation and characterization of a mutant BCG strain with an inactivated mce gene, by homologous recombination with double cross-over. This mutant strain does not express the mycobacterial cell entry protein (Mce) and exhibits a reduced ability to invade the non-phagocytic epithelial cell line HeLa as compared to wild-type BCG.

Fifty consecutive cases of surgical instrumentation and fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis were prospectively studied to test the hypothesis that the use of predonated autologous blood combined with judicious perioperative blood salvage could decrease the amount of homologous blood needed. All cases had posterior instrumentation and fusion. Nineteen patients had their rib prominence resected with an average of 4.
