Introduction: This article discusses three significant hospitals that were constructed in medieval Persia, specifically in the city of Shiraz, which is located in central present-day Iran. The first of these three hospitals is the Azodi Hospital, which was constructed during the Buyid dynasty. The second hospital was constructed during the Salghurid dynasty and is referred to as the Mozzafari Hospital by a primary source written by Qutb al-Din Shirazi, a physician who worked there.

Introduction: Johann Conrad Brunner (1653-1727) was a European anatomist and physician whose research concerning the pancreas and duodenum has made him a prominent figure in medicine. However, Brunner should also be recognized for his descriptions of syringomyelia, which were originally published in 1688 and included in the second edition of Theophilus Boneti's compendium of postmortem examinations, the Sepulchretum, which was published in 1700.

Conclusions: Our current understanding of syringomyelia is based on the early observations of researchers such as Johann Conrad Brunner.

Various case reports on nasal myiasis written during the 1990s and 2000s state that nasal myiasis, which is known as peenash among South Asian natives, is a form of divine punishment in Hindu mythology, but do not provide citations from Hindu scriptures that would suggest this interpretation. This paper aims to discuss the phenomenon of peenash in a historical context by examining medical literature written during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to identify Hindu texts contributing to the belief of some Hindus that nasal myiasis is a form of divine punishment, and to provide an overview of contemporary treatment for and management of nasal myiasis.

Yubitsume is the ritualistic self-amputation of the proximal digits at the distal interphalangeal joint (DIP) among members of the Japanese Mafia, or Yakuza. This practice of self-mutilation is done as a sign of apology for making a mistake deemed punishable by higher-ranking members or violating the code of the Yakuza. Members of the Yakuza may present to emergency departments seeking medical assistance to stop hemorrhage or treat infection at the site of injury following self-amputation or to have the severed portion of the injured finger reattached.
