Development of a modified serum-free medium for Vero cell cultures: effects of protein hydrolysates, l-glutamine and SITE liquid media supplement on cell growth.

Vero cells have been widely used in the viral vaccine production due to the recommendation of the World Health Organization regarding its safety and non-tumorigenicity. The aim of this study was to describe the development a modified serum-free medium for Vero cell cultures. Two protein hydrolysates (Bacto™ soytone and Bacto™ yeast extract), vitamin C, vitamin B12, SITE liquid media supplement, and recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rEGF) were investigated as serum substitutes.

Impact of Crystalline Structural Differences Between α- and β-Chitosan on Their Nanoparticle Formation Via Ionic Gelation and Superoxide Radical Scavenging Activities.

α- and β-Chitosan nanoparticles were obtained from shrimp shell and squid pen chitosan with different set of deacetylation degree (%DD) and molecular weight (MW) combinations. After nanoparticle formation via ionic gelation with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP), the % crystallinity index (%CI) of the α- and β-chitosan nanoparticles were reduced to approximately 33% and 43% of the initial %CI of the corresponding α- and βchitosan raw samples, respectively. Both forms of chitosan and chitosan nanoparticles scavenged superoxide radicals in a dose-dependent manner.

Statistical optimization for Monacolin K and yellow pigment production and citrinin reduction by Monascus purpureus in solid-state fermentation.

Monacolin K and yellow pigment, produced by Monascus sp., have each been proven to be beneficial compounds as antihypercholesterolemic and anti-inflammation agents, respectively. However, citrinin, a human toxic substance, was also synthesized in this fungus.

Fuzzy logic control of rotating drum bioreactor for improved production of amylase and protease enzymes by Aspergillus oryzae in solid-state fermentation.

In this study, we compared the performance of two control systems, fuzzy logic control (FLC) and conventional control (CC). The control systems were applied for controlling temperature and substrate moisture content in a solidstate fermentation for the biosynthesis of amylase and protease enzymes by Aspergillus oryzae. The fermentation process was achieved in a 200 L rotating drum bioreactor.

Fermentation process development of recombinant Hansenula polymorpha for gamma-linolenic acid production.

Development in the strain and the fermentation process of Hansenula polymorpha was implemented for the production of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, C18:3 delta 6,9,12), which is an n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and has been reported to possess a number of health benefits. The mutated delta 6-desaturase (S213A) gene of Mucor rouxii was expressed in H. polymorpha under the control of the methanol oxidase (MOX) promoter.
