Over the past 2 years there has been a radical change in standard clinical practice with respect to vitamin D. As a result of a growing body of knowledgeable physicians are assessing the vitamin D nutritional status of their patients and prescribing aggressive repletion regimens of a vitamin D supplement. The present paper summarizes some basic information about this essential nutrient and reviews some of the more recent data implicating vitamin D deficiency in disease etiology with an emphasis on cardiovascular disease and cancer.

The stability of nifedipine in an extemporaneously compounded oral solution is described. A solution of nifedipine 10 mg/mL was prepared from commercially available nifedipine powder with polyethylene glycol 400, glycerin, and peppermint oil. Four samples were stored in amber glass bottles at room temperature under fluorescent lighting and analyzed in duplicate.

The stability of ganciclovir in extemporaneously prepared sugar-containing and sugar-free oral liquids was studied. The contents of 80 250-mg capsules of ganciclovir were combined with Ora-Sweet or Ora-Sweet SF (sugar free) (Paddock Laboratories) to produce 200 mL of suspension with a ganciclovir concentration of 100 mg/mL. Five 1-mL samples were analyzed immediately, and the rest of the suspension was poured into five 60-mL amber polyethylene terephthalate bottles and stored at 23-25 degrees C.

During alkalosis in vivo, renal tissue [citrate] [( citrate]t) increases and citrate reabsorption (Tcit) and utilization (Qcit) simultaneously decrease. The decrease in Qcit is interpreted to cause the increased [citrate]t, which in turn decreases Tcit X Renal citrate handling and [citrate]t could be regulated by other mechanisms, since alkalosis changes [substrate] and [H+] in extracellular (ECF) and intracellular (ICF) fluid. Also, since high plasma [citrate] decreases ionized [Ca2+] (Cai), it is not possible to determine in vivo whether there is a maximum for Tcit or Qcit and whether change in extracellular fluid (delta ECF) pH affects these maxima.
