Introduction: The diagnosis or treatment of breast cancer is sometimes delayed. A lengthy delay may have a negative psychological impact on patients. The aim of our study was to evaluate the sociodemographic, clinical and pathological factors associated with delay in the provision of surgical treatment for localised breast cancer, in a prospective cohort of patients.

Methods: Secondary analysis from a prospective cohort study. All LT adults admitted to ICU for acute respiratory failure (ARF) over 5 years were included.

A secondary analysis of a prospective multicenter cohort was performed in six intensive care units (ICU) in four European countries (France, Greece, Spain and Turkey). The main objective was to identify factors associated with ventilator-associated events (VAEs) in adults who underwent mechanical ventilation (MV) ≥ 48 h. Secondary objectives were to identify: variables influencing VAE in the subpopulation with endotracheal intubation and in those subjects who were ventilated > 7 days.

Methods: A total of 535 women were included in the validation study. We calculated predicted 5-year survival using the beta values from the development of the PREDICT model and predicted and observed events for a given risk groups.
Background: Antiretroviral drugs contained in single tablet Atripla have pharmacokinetic properties that could allow for longer than once-daily dosing. We hypothesized that simplifying Atripla once daily to 3-day per week would be feasible, able to maintain viral suppression and less toxic.
Methods: Virologically suppressed (≥2 years) HIV+ adults on Atripla once daily, CD4 greater than 350 cells/μl at inclusion, and no prior documented virological failure or evidence of resistance mutations to efavirenz, tenofovir, or emtricitabine were randomized to maintain their once-daily (OD) regimen or to reduce it to 3 days (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) a week (3W) (A-TRI-WEEK pilot trial).
Women with a benign breast disease (BBD) have an increased risk of subsequent breast carcinoma. Information is scarce regarding the characteristics of breast carcinomas diagnosed after a BBD. Our aim was to point out the differences in clinical and histologic characteristics of breast carcinomas diagnosed in women with and without a previous pathologic diagnosis of BBD in the context of population-based mammography screening.

It seems ethically necessary to inform women so that they can actively participate in decision-making and make an informed choice based on their values and preferences. The objective of this study is to assess the effects of receiving information about the benefits and harms of screening on decision-making, in women approaching the age of invitation to mammography screening.

Our aim was to explore whether estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and Ki67 expression stratify risk of breast cancer in screened women with BBD.

Our purpose was to investigate the prevalence of persistent pain and associated factors in women diagnosed with breast cancer (screening or interval) in the context of a population-based breast cancer screening program in Spain.
Methods: A total of 1,057 women participating in a population-based breast cancer screening program were diagnosed with breast cancer between 2000 and 2008.
Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of transmitted drug resistance (TDR) and non-B subtypes in patients with acute/recent HIV-1 infection in Barcelona during the period 1997-2012.
Methods: Patients from the "Hospital Clínic Primary HIV-1 Infection Cohort" with a genotyping test performed within 180 days of infection were included. The 2009 WHO List of Mutations for Surveillance of Transmitted HIV-1 Drug Resistance was used for estimating the prevalence of TDR and phylogenetic analysis for subtype determination.
Background: Women with a false-positive result after a screening mammogram have an increased risk of cancer detection in subsequent participations, especially after assessments involving cytology or biopsy. We aimed to compare women's personal characteristics, tumoral features and the radiological appearance of cancers with and without a previous false-positive result generated by additional imaging or invasive procedures.
Methods: From 1996 to 2007, 111,098 women aged 45-69 years participated in four population-based breast cancer screening programs in Spain, and 1281 cancers were detected.
Background: Quantification and description of patients recently infected by HIV can provide an accurate estimate of the dynamics of HIV transmission. Between 2006 and 2008 in Catalonia, we estimated the prevalence of recent HIV infection among newly diagnosed cases, described the epidemiological characteristics of the infection according to whether it was recent, long-standing or advanced, and identified factors associated with recent infection.
Methods: A Test for Recent Infection (TRI) was performed in serum samples from patients newly diagnosed with HIV.
Objectives: To compare tumour characteristics between cancers detected with screen-film mammography (SFM) and digital mammography (DM) and to evaluate changes in positive predictive values (PPVs) for further assessments, for invasive procedures and for distinct radiological patterns in recalled women.
Methods: 242,838 screening mammograms (171,191 SFM and 71,647 DM) from 103,613 women aged 45-69 years, performed in four population-based breast cancer screening programmes in Spain, were included. The tumour characteristics and PPVs of each group were compared.
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to assess the prevalence of transmitted HIV-1 drug resistances (TDR) and HIV-1 subtypes in recently infected patients in Catalonia between 2003 and 2005 and to describe the characteristics of these patients according to the presence or absence of TDR and HIV-1 subtype.
Methods: After application of the Serological Testing Algorithm for Recent HIV Seroconversion (STARHS), residual aliquots of serum samples from recently infected antiretroviral-naïve individuals were genotyped. FASTA sequences were analyzed using the HIVDB Program.
