Objectives: To investigate the use of a set of dynamical features, extracted from surface electromyography, to study upper motor neuron (UMN) degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Methods: We acquired surface EMG signals from the upper limb muscles of 13 ALS patients and 20 control subjects and classified them according to a novel set of muscle activity features, describing the temporal and frequency dynamic behavior of the signals, as well as measures of its complexity. Using a battery of classification approaches, we searched for the most discriminating combination of those features, as well as a suitable strategy to identify ALS.

The PLZF transcription factor is essential for osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs; however, its regulation and molecular function during this process is not fully understood. Here, we revealed that the locus encoding PLZF, is repressed by Polycomb (PcG) and H3K27me3 in naive hMSCs. At the pre-osteoblast stage of differentiation, the locus lost PcG binding and H3K27me3, gained JMJD3 recruitment, and H3K27ac resulting in high expression of PLZF.

Phosphorylation of histone H3 (H3) on serine 28 (S28) at genomic regions marked by trimethylation of lysine 27 (H3K27me3) often correlates with increased expression of genes normally repressed by Polycomb group proteins (PcG). We show that amphetamine, an addictive psychostimulant, and haloperidol, a typical antipsychotic drug, increase the phosphorylation of H3 at S28 and that this effect occurs in the context of H3K27me3. The increases in H3K27me3S28p occur in distinct populations of projection neurons located in the striatum, the major component of the basal ganglia.

Polycomb group (PcG) proteins bind to and repress genes in embryonic stem cells through lineage commitment to the terminal differentiated state. PcG repressed genes are commonly characterized by the presence of the epigenetic histone mark H3K27me3, catalyzed by the Polycomb repressive complex 2. Here, we present in vivo evidence for a previously unrecognized plasticity of PcG-repressed genes in terminally differentiated brain neurons of parkisonian mice.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the thermocycling effect on the microshear bond strength (μSBS) of different self-adhesive resin cements to zirconia using tribochemical silica coating Rocatec™ (ROC) and Er:YAG as surface conditioners. Two hundred forty square-like zirconia samples were polished and randomly assigned in four groups according surface treatment applied as follows: (1) no treatment (NT), (2) silica coating with ROC, 3) Er:YAG laser irradiation (LAS: 2.940 nm, 200 mJ; 10 Hz), and (4) laser followed by Rocatec™ (LAROC).

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of the particle size of sandblasting and the composition of the resin cement on the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) to zirconia.

Methods: Forty zirconia blocks (Cercon, Dentsply) were polished and randomly treated as follows: Group 1 (NT): no treatment; Group 2 (APA-I): airborne particle abrasion (Cobra, Renfert) using 25-μm aluminium-oxide (Al(2)O(3))-particles; Group 3 (APA-II): APA with 50-μm Al(2)O(3)-particles; and Group 4 (APA-III): APA using 110-μm Al(2)O(3)-particles. Ceramic blocks were duplicated in composite resin.

An increasing aesthetic demand within developed populations conducted to the fabrication of metal-free restorations and to a wide use of ceramic materials, due to its excellent characteristics of biocompatibility and aesthetics. With the incessant increase of commercial labels involved in this technological advance, a review is imposed on ceramic abutments, specifically on zirconia.
