The efficacy of aerial application and chemigation of insecticides is not well explored for western bean cutworm, Striacosta albicosta (Smith), management in corn. In the short term, inadequate application of insecticides can lead to control failures when insect pests are not effectively targeted. In the longer term, exposure to sublethal insecticide concentrations can contribute to the evolution of insecticide resistance.

Invasive phaeohyphomycosis co-infection with Alternaria spp. and Curvularia spp. in a neutropenic host.

Phaeohyphomycoses are infections caused by dark-walled dematiaceous fungi. Alternaria and Curvularia are two genera of dematiaceous molds known to cause invasive fungal rhinosinusitis, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Co-infection with two dematiaceous fungi is rarely reported in the literature.

Background: Posaconazole maintains broad antifungal activity and is employed for prevention and treatment of invasive fungal infections in oncology patients. Older formulations required therapeutic drug monitoring, and specific plasma drug levels have been recommended. This study evaluated factors associated with subtherapeutic concentrations with the newer delayed-release tablet formulation.

Background: The wMel strain of Wolbachia has been successfully introduced into Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and has been shown to reduce the transmission of dengue and other Aedes-borne viruses. Here we report the entomological results from phased, large-scale releases of Wolbachia infected Ae. aegypti mosquitoes throughout three contiguous cities located in the Aburrá Valley, Colombia.

Safety and Outcomes With Combination Therapy With Sarilumab and Baricitinib for Severe COVID-19 Respiratory Infection in Cancer Patients.

Objectives: This study aims to describe the clinical outcomes of combination therapy with sarilumab and baricitinib for severe novel Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) infection in cancer patients. With this study, we aim to evaluate the role of expanded immunotherapy for severely ill patients with COVID-19 respiratory infections with limited options. The secondary objective is to assess the safety of combination therapy with sarilumab and baricitinib for severe COVID-19 infection.

Movement of (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Larvae on Transgenic and Non- Maize.

Exposure of lepidopteran pests to () proteins has been shown to affect the behavior of larvae, including increased movement and avoidance of -expressing plants or diet. Therefore, we hypothesized that the behavior of western bean cutworm, (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), an important pest of maize, could be affected when exposed to plants. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a series of artificial arena and on-plant experiments to determine neonate behavior when exposed to and non- plant tissue.

Characterization of western corn rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) susceptibility to foliar insecticides in northeast Nebraska.

Foliar-applied insecticides are commonly used for adult western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), control in Nebraska but little efficacy data is available. Anecdotal reports of reduced efficacy in areas of northeast Nebraska led to the conduct of this study. Objectives were to (i) evaluate the efficacy of commercial applications of commonly used formulated insecticides (bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, chlorpyrifos, or tank mixes) for WCR control in 7 northeast Nebraska counties during 2019 and 2020 and (ii) conduct adult WCR concentration-response vial bioassays with bifenthrin, chlorpyrifos, and dimethoate active ingredients on a subset of field populations.

Impact of red blood cell transfusion on regional cerebral oxygen saturation during pediatric ECMO.

Background: Low cerebral regional tissue oxygenation (crSO2) is associated with unfavorable neurological outcomes in children requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion can improve brain oxygenation and crSO2 has been proposed as a noninvasive monitoring tool that could aid in RBC transfusion decision-making. However, how crSO2 responds to RBC transfusion is largely unknown.

Rising Mortality in Coronavirus-19 Patients Supported With Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.

We aimed to describe practice patterns and outcomes in patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support throughout the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, with the hypothesis that mortality would improve as we accumulated knowledge and experience. We included 48 patients supported on veno-venous ECMO (VV-ECMO) at a single institution between April 2020 and December 2021. Patients were categorized into three waves based on cannulation date, corresponding to the wild-type (wave 1), alpha (wave 2), and delta (wave 3) variants.

Multiple Arterial Graft Use in Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: Surgeon Perspective vs Practice.

Background: Despite supportive evidence and guidelines, the use of multiple arterial grafts (MAGs) in coronary artery bypass grafting remains low. We sought to determine surgeon perception of personal MAG use and compare this with actual MAG use.

Methods: We conducted a statewide surgeon survey of MAG use, presence of a hospital MAG protocol, and barriers for MAG use, with a response rate of 78% (n = 25).

ATP-Sensitive Potassium Channel Opener Diazoxide Reduces Myocardial Stunning in a Porcine Regional With Subsequent Global Ischemia Model.

Background ATP-sensitive potassium channels are inhibited by ATP and open during metabolic stress, providing endogenous myocardial protection. Pharmacologic opening of ATP potassium channels with diazoxide preserves myocardial function following prolonged global ischemia, making it an ideal candidate for use during cardiac surgery. We hypothesized that diazoxide would reduce myocardial stunning after regional ischemia with subsequent prolonged global ischemia, similar to the clinical situation of myocardial ischemia at the time of revascularization.

Disseminated Toxoplasmosis in an Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipient: A Case Report and Review of the Current Literature.

Reactivation infections in hematopoietic stem cell transplants are mitigated by prophylactic regimens. Despite high rates of exposure, morbidity and mortality secondary to toxoplasmosis are limited to subsets of patients such as immunocompromised persons. We describe the first case of disseminated toxoplasmosis in a double umbilical cord blood transplant recipient.

Pyrethroid insecticide and milkweed cardenolide interactions on detoxification enzyme activity and expression in monarch caterpillars.

Declines of the monarch butterfly population have prompted large-scale plantings of milkweed to restore the population. In North America, there are >73 species of milkweed to choose from for these nationwide plantings. However, it is unclear how different milkweed species affect monarch caterpillar physiology, particularly detoxification enzyme activity and gene expression, given the highly variable cardenolide composition across milkweed species.

Purpose: Dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLS), one of the most common and aggressive sarcomas, infrequently responds to chemotherapy. DDLS survival and growth depend on underexpression of C/EBPα, a tumor suppressor and transcriptional regulator controlling adipogenesis. Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Complications in Heparin- and Bivalirudin-Treated Patients.

Unlabelled: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a potentially life-saving intervention in refractory cardiopulmonary failure, but it requires anticoagulation to prevent circuit thromboses, which exposes the patient to hemorrhagic complications. Heparin has traditionally been the anticoagulant of choice, but the direct thrombin inhibitor bivalirudin is routinely used in cases of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and has been suggested as a superior choice. We sought to examine the timing of hemorrhagic and thrombotic complications after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cannulation and to compare the rates of such complications between patients anticoagulated with heparin versus bivalirudin.
