This can extend into the renal vein and inferior vena cava (IVC), increasing the risk of pulmonary embolism. In cases of massive pulmonary embolism, the use of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is lifesaving, allowing time for hemodynamic stability and definitive treatment.
