Biological sex estimation in experimentally burnt patellae: exploring sexual dimorphism through comparative analysis.

The patella has been used in various studies to verify its value in the estimation of biological sex. However, there is limited understanding regarding the alterations the bone undergoes when exposed to the effects of fire and how it affects sexual dimorphism. The current study aims to study the efficacy of three patella measurements, and generate an equation and cut-off points, to estimate the sex of individuals that had their patellae subjected to burning.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is recommended for long-term enteral nutrition in dysphagic patients. This study aims to characterize conditions motivating PEG, assess nutritional status on the gastrostomy day, evaluate survival and search for survival predictors. Retrospective study of adult patients who underwent PEG in a tertiary hospital from 2001 to 2023.

Primary Pulmonary Epithelial-Myoepithelial Carcinoma: A Case Report and Comprehensive Literature Review of a Rare Lung Neoplasm.

Primary epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) of the lung is a rare subtype of pulmonary tumors. Originating from bronchial submucosal glands, EMC shares histopathological characteristics with its salivary gland counterparts and typically presents as a low-grade malignancy. Due to its rarity, there is limited literature to guide diagnosis and management.

Genetic variants in the IFNGR2 locus associated with severe chronic Q fever.

Q fever is a highly contagious zoonosis capable of causing large outbreaks of important health and economic consequences. Host genetic factors are believed to influence the development of severe chronic Q fever following the infection by the etiological agent, Coxiella burnetii. Targetted next generation sequencing (NGS) was performed in a case-control genetic association study on 53 confirmed Q fever cases, including 38 compatible with acute and 15 with chronic disease, and 29 samples from the general Portuguese population.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Patients With Post-Tuberculosis Lung Disease: A Prospective Multicentre Study.

Introduction: The majority of the studies on pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD) were from a single center, had a low sample size and/or did not allow a complete functional evaluation before and after PR program (PRP). The objective of this study was to evaluate if PTLD patients had benefits from PR in a large collaborating multicentre study conducted in reference centers in Brazil, Italy and France.

Methods: PTLD patients underwent a comprehensive 5-week PRP (Group 1), and were compared with non-rehabilitated patients (Group 2).

Background: Despite advances in malaria chemotherapy, the disease continues to claim thousands of lives annually. Addressing this issue requires the discovery of new compounds to counteract resistance threatening the current therapeutic arsenal. In this context, bi-triazoles are substances with diverse biological activities, showing promise as lead compound to fight malaria.

Maternal and Fetal Implications of Oropouche Fever, Espírito Santo State, Brazil, 2024.

Reemergence of Oropouche fever in Brazil raises concerns about potential risks for infection in pregnancy. We describe a case series of Oropouche fever in pregnant women and their neonates in Espírito Santo State, Brazil, in 2024. Of 73 pregnancies, 15 pregnancies concluded by the end of the study period; of those, 14 resulted in live births and 1 in spontaneous abortion.

Quality of life and clinical data in hemodialysis patients with different degrees of pruritus.

Chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP), a persistent itching sensation, is prevalent among hemodialysis patients. This study aims to understand its prevalence, its possible association with selected solutes, and impact on quality of life (QoL) in hemodialysis patients. Involving 434 hemodialysis patients in Spain, this observational study employed a survey based on validated pruritus assessment tools, alongside demographic, clinical, and biochemical data collection.

Lectins from this genus exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, influencing the activation of the immune system. Influence of Functional Variations in Genes of Neurotrophins and Neurotransmitter Systems on the Development of Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Retinal neurodevelopment, vascularization, homeostasis, and stress response are influenced by factors such as (), (), (), and (). As retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a neurovascular retinal disease, this study analyzed the contributions of (rs6330), (rs7934165), (rs10770141), and (rs507392) genetic functional polymorphisms to the modulation of hematological and biochemical parameters of the first week of life and their association with ROP development. A multicenter cohort of 396 preterm infants (gestational age < 32 weeks or birth weight < 1500 g) was genotyped using MicroChip DNA and iPlex MassARRAY platform.

Background: Short bowel syndrome is a devastating malabsorptive condition and the most common cause of chronic intestinal failure (CIF). Patients need parenteral support for months or years. Ideally, it should be delivered at home, reducing limitations in everyday life activities.

Coordination of care in health systems for users with diabetes and hypertension: a scoping review.

Objective: to map the available evidence on the characteristics of care coordination between Primary Health Care and Specialized Outpatient Care for users with diabetes and hypertension.

Method: this is a scoping review with 40 articles as the final sample, evaluated by means of Content Analysis, of the thematic-categorical type, with the aid of a technological tool.

Results: care coordination was defined by means of eight categories: information and communication, integration of care, improvement and quality, care management, care sharing, fundamental attribute, health professionals and health service users, with the results of the articles concentrating mainly on four categories, with information and communication standing out, followed by the category of care management and the category of care sharing, in parallel with improvement and quality.

Cotadutide reversible self-assembly based long-acting injectable depot for sustained delivery of GLP-1 glucagon receptor agonists with controlled burst release.

Cotadutide (Cota) is a lipidated dual GLP-1 and Glucagon receptor agonist that was investigated for the treatment of various metabolic diseases, it is designed for once daily subcutaneous (SC) administration. Invasive daily injections can result in poor patient compliance with chronic disease, and here, we demonstrate an innovative strategy of encapsulating reversible cota self-assembled fibers within an in-situ forming depot of low molecular weight poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (LWPLGA) for sustained delivery GLP-1 and Glucagon receptor agonist with controlled burst release. This could be a suitable alternative to other sustained delivery strategies for fibrillating peptides.

Retained versus removed copper intrauterine device during pregnancy: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are highly effective contraceptives. Despite their effectiveness, pregnancies can occur during IUD use, and the management of such cases, particularly when the pregnancy is desired, remains controversial.

Material And Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate outcomes in women who unintentionally conceived while using IUDs and chose to continue their pregnancies.

Fetal Hemoglobin as a Predictive Biomarker for Retinopathy of Prematurity: A Prospective Multicenter Cohort Study in Portugal.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of vision impairment in preterm infants, with its pathogenesis linked to oxygen exposure. Red blood cell (RBC) transfusions, commonly performed in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), reduce fetal hemoglobin (HbF) fraction, altering oxygen dynamics and potentially contributing to ROP. We aimed to investigate the relationship between RBC transfusions, HbF percentage, and ROP, evaluating HbF as a potential predictive biomarker.

Effects of photobiomodulation therapy (660-nm laser) on median nerve function in Wistar rats.

This study investigates the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) with a 660-nm laser on nerve regeneration and muscle morphometry following median nerve axonotmesis in rats. Sixteen Wistar rats were divided into a control group and laser-treated group, with the latter receiving 10 applications of PBM (660 nm; 20 mW; 10 J/cm; 0.4 J; and 20 s) over 2 weeks.

Effectiveness of HPV vaccination in reducing infection among young Brazilian women.

Background: Globally, cervical cancer is an increasing public health issue, and vaccination against HPV has proven to be an effective strategy to reduce this neoplasia. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the quadrivalent vaccine in reducing the prevalence and incidence of HPV infection in women, aged 18 to 24 years old, in the cities of Ouro Preto and Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Methods: A concurrent cohort study was performed, with an initial follow-up of 12 to 18 months.

Methods: Documentary study carried out on CEMENF's Instagram and on the YouTube of the School of Nursing of UFMG, from September to December 2021. The findings were analyzed according to Pierre Lévy's concepts.

Aim: To evaluate the presence of women on editorial boards and as authors in leading global endodontics journals from 2018 to 2023.

Methodology: The selection of journals was based on the impact factor from Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and CiteScore 2022, with criteria of JCR above 1 and CiteScore above 1.5.

Maternal caffeine intake during pregnancy and the risk of childhood asthma by 10 years of age-Evidence from The Generation XXI birth cohort study.

Background: We aimed to investigate the association between maternal caffeine intake during pregnancy and asthma in children by 10 years of age.

Methods: We considered 5585 mother-child pairs enrolled in a population-based birth cohort. Consumption of regular and decaffeinated coffee, black and green tea, and cola beverages before and during pregnancy was obtained through face-to-face interviews within 72 h after giving birth, and total caffeine intake (mg/day) was estimated.

Mobile Application for Tracking Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder: Content Validation and Usability.

Background: This study aims to validate the content and evaluate the usability of the Autism App for screening children with autism spectrum disorder.

Methods: This methodological study was conducted between August 2023 and March 2024. The study included 15 experts for content validation and nine for usability evaluation, all of whom had experience in the health/technology field.
