Formic acid is consistently produced and detected in prebiotic chemistry experiments, constituting a precursor of many carboxylic acids and amino acids. Its behavior with exposure to gamma radiation varies with the pH and solution concentration. This work aimed to model different environmental conditions for formic acid under ionizing radiation using a system of coupled differential equations based on chemical kinetics.

A 26-year-old male with no significant medical history presented with hematochezia and was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC) accompanied by immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) as an extraintestinal manifestation (EIM) of UC. This case report delves into the uncommon overlap between UC, a subtype of inflammatory bowel disease primarily affecting the colon and rectum, and ITP, an autoimmune condition leading to platelet destruction. The patient's atypical presentation and subsequent positive response to a treatment regimen targeting both UC and ITP underscores the necessity for a thorough and multifaceted diagnostic approach in individuals with UC, especially when faced with non-gastrointestinal symptoms like unexplained thrombocytopenia.

Background: Research to date has detailed numerous challenges in emergency department (ED) communication with persons living with dementia (PLWD) and their caregivers. However, little is known about communication experiences of individuals belonging to minoritized racial and ethnic groups, who are disproportionately impacted by dementia and less likely to be included in dementia research.

Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 29 caregivers of PLWD from two urban academic hospital EDs with distinct patient populations.

Throughout the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico (August-December 2020), we closely followed a cohort of n = 100 healthcare workers. These workers were initially seronegative for Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and maintained close contact with patients afflicted by the disease. We explored the database of demographic, physiological and laboratory parameters of the cohort recorded at baseline to identify potential risk factors for infection with SARS-CoV-2 at a follow-up evaluation six months later.

Achalasia is a rare esophageal motility disorder for which the etiology is not fully understood. Evidence suggests that autoimmune inflammatory infiltrates, possibly triggered by a viral infection, may lead to a degeneration of neurons within the myenteric plexus. While the infection is eventually resolved, genetically susceptible individuals may still be at risk of developing achalasia.

The cornea transplant is considered the most frequently performed type of transplant in the world, with a demand that has been increasing in recent years. An observational descriptive study was conducted, focusing on the ocular tissue extracted from cadaveric donors from January 2019 to December 2021 at the Red Cross Eye Bank in Medellin, Colombia. This is the first epidemiological characterization of corneal donor tissues within the eye banks of our city, where high rates of violence-related deaths explain that tissue donors are mostly young individuals.

Epiploic appendages are fat-filled sacs that are generally located along the surface of the large intestine. In most cases, epiploic appendagitis (EA) is described as an ischemic infarction of an epiploic appendage as the result of torsion or spontaneous thrombosis of the central draining vein of the epiploic appendage. The patient described in this report presented with a sudden onset of diffuse abdominal pain, nausea, and fever.

Background: Cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and stroke are life-threatening complications associated with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). As previous studies observed an association between cardiovascular events and the loss of circadian variations of blood pressure, we investigated the 24 h circadian rhythm of blood pressure (BP) in 24 NF1 patients (10 males and 14 females, with a mean age of 39.5 years ± 14 years) by using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM).

Correct diagnosis of iron deficiency remains challenging due to the cost of ferritin tests. Physicians, especially those in resource-limited settings, may resort to a complete blood count (CBC) when considering iron deficiency and anemia due to its accessibility. Although this has been practiced, it is still beneficial to assess whether CBC parameters exhibit the diagnostic capability of discriminating such medical conditions.

A prolonged and elevated postprandial glucose response (PPGR) is now considered a main factor contributing for the development of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, which could be prevented by dietary interventions. However, dietary recommendations to prevent alterations in PPGR have not always been successful. New evidence has supported that PPGR is not only dependent of dietary factors like the content of carbohydrates, or the glycemic index of the foods, but is also dependent on genetics, body composition, gut microbiota, among others.

Background: Variant curation refers to the application of evidence-based methods for the interpretation of genetic variants. Significant variability in this process among laboratories affects clinical practice. For admixed Hispanic/Latino populations, underrepresented in genomic databases, the interpretation of genetic variants for cancer risk is challenging.

Pheochromocytomas (PCCs) and paragangliomas (PGLs) (known as PPGL in combination) are rare neuroendocrine tumors of the adrenal medulla and extra-adrenal ganglia. About 40% of the patients with PPGL have a hereditary predisposition. Here we present a case-series of 19 unrelated Colombian patients with a clinical diagnosis of PPGL tumors that underwent germline genetic testing as part of the Hereditary Cancer Program developed at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, Colombia (INC-C), the largest reference cancer center in the country.

Among the Mediterranean horticultural landraces, garlic is one of the crops most threatened by genetic erosion. Due to its sexual sterility and to the incidence of seed-borne diseases, historical varieties have been widely replaced by commercial cultivars. In Catalonia, despite the historical relevance of the crop, solely the Belltall garlic landrace is cultivated for commercial purposes.

Legumes and nuts are components of high importance in the diet of many countries, mainly those in the Mediterranean region. They are also very versatile and culturally diverse foods found all over the world, acting as a basic protein source in certain countries. Their genetic diversity is needed to sustain the food supply and security for humans and livestock, especially because of the current loss of habitats, species, and genetic diversity worldwide, but also because of the ever present need to feed the increasing human population.

Health care workers (HCW) are at high risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in HCW has been examined in cross-sectional studies by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) tests, which may lead to underestimating exact incidence rates. We thus investigated the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a group of HCW at a dedicated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospital in a six-month follow-up period.

Cirrhosis is an end-stage liver disease that can cause changes in any component of the hemostatic system. The net effects of the complicated hemostatic changes have long been unknown due to concurrent changes in pro-and antihemostatic drivers. Coagulation disorders are caused by various factors, including decreased clotting and inhibitor factor synthesis, reduced clearance of activated factors, quantitative and qualitative platelet defects, hyperfibrinolysis, and increased intravascular coagulation.

Mitral stenosis (MS), a valvular heart disease, is defined by the narrowing of the mitral valve orifice. The common risk factors for stroke include mitral annular calcification (MAC), diabetes mellitus (DM), male gender, hypertension (HTN), hyperlipidemia, and obesity. Endothelial damage, hypercoagulability, and blood stasis in the left atrium promote the development of the thrombus.
