Using CHO-K1/A5 cells, a clonal cell line that robustly expresses adult muscle-type nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), we explored whether insulin resistance in these mammalian cells affects cell-surface expression of the nAChR, its endocytic internalization, and actin cytoskeleton integrity. Acute nanomolar insulin stimulation resulted in a slow increase in nAChR cell-surface levels, reaching maximum levels at ∼1 h. Long periods of insulin incubation caused CHO-K1/A5 cells to become insulin resistant, as previously observed with several other cell types.

A small litter (SL) model was used to determine how neonatal overfeeding affects the homeostatic control of food intake in male rats at weaning and postnatal day (PND) 90. At PND4, litters were reduced to small (4 pups/dam) or normal (10 pups/dam) litters. At weaning, SL rats showed higher body weight and characteristic features of the metabolic syndrome.

Genetic research has revealed pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) to be a fundamental regulator of energy balance and body weight in mammals. Within the brain, POMC is primarily expressed in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC), while a smaller population exists in the brainstem nucleus of the solitary tract (POMCNTS). Background: The American Heart Association's ideal cardiovascular health (ICH) define criteria for seven metrics, four classified as lifestyle factors (diet, physical activity, smoking and body-mass index) and four classified as health factors (smoking, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose and total cholesterol). We aimed to analyze ICH scores at the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) baseline assessment and the associations with sociodemographic characteristics (age, sex, race, educational level, and family income).

Methods: We analyzed 13,356 ELSA-Brasil participants without cardiovascular disease using quasi-Poisson regression models to study the association between the ICH score and sociodemographic characteristics.

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) play an important role in regulating appetite and have been shown to do so by influencing neural activity in the hypothalamus. To shed light on the hypothalamic circuits governing acetylcholine's (ACh) regulation of appetite this study investigated the influence of hypothalamic nAChRs expressing the α4 subunit. We found that antagonizing the α4β2 nAChR locally in the lateral hypothalamus with di-hydro-ß-erythroidine (DHβE), an α4 nAChR antagonist with moderate affinity, caused an increase in food intake following free access to food after a 12 hour fast, compared to saline-infused animals.

A poor prenatal environment brings about perturbations in leptin surge and hypothalamic circuitry that program impaired ability to regulate energy homeostasis in adulthood. Here, using a rat model of moderate maternal caloric restriction during gestation, we aimed to investigate whether leptin supplementation with physiological doses throughout lactation is able to ameliorate the adverse developmental malprogramming effects exerted in offspring hypothalamus structure and function. We aimed to assess the effects of maternal supplementation with the main fat sources used in the human Western diet (olive oil, butter, margarine) on milk FA composition and on plasma FA profile of offspring, and to determine whether it may influence body-weight-gain (BWG) and adiposity of offspring during the suckling period. Wistar rats were supplemented with the different fat sources from day 14 of gestation and throughout lactation. Olive oil-supplemented dams showed the highest proportion of oleic-acid in milk, with no changes in plasma.

Scope: This study investigates the lasting effects of maternal supplementation with different fat sources during pregnancy and lactation on feeding behavior and energy homeostasis of their offspring, and its relation to hypothetical effects in the development of main central structures involved in leptin signaling.

Methods And Results: Offspring of dams supplemented with olive oil, butter, or margarine during late pregnancy and lactation were fed with normal fat (NF) diet until 4-month-old, and then with NF or high fat (HF) diet until 6-month-old. Results showed that 21-day-old margarine group pups presented a higher cell number in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) (females) and higher hypothalamic ObRb/SOCS3 mRNA ratio (males).

This study describes the experience of an undergraduate Nursing student in the construction of a clinical case in mental health for the disciplines Mental Health Nursing II and Psychiatrics Nursing at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). In those disciplines case construction is understood as the coordination of the psychiatric interview and a number of concepts from the theory of psychoanalysis, learned in classes, supervision and books, with the aim of structuring a nursing care that is coherent with the psychoanalytical referential's conception of human being: a subject divided by the unconscious, structured as speech The report was based on the student's experience while taking the disciplines, producing reports and constructing the case as a final paper. The student was able to develop a comprehension of the case and build a supporting theory for caring through the demands that came up in the dialogue with the patient that pointed out the points in which intervention was possible.
