Background: Weight gain prevention is a critical component of comprehensive obesity care. Emotional eating may contribute to unwanted weight gain, increasing cardiometabolic risk factors among adults with obesity. One way to help reduce emotional eating and reduce weight gain is to provide instruction in Appetite Awareness Training (AAT).

Childhood obesity disproportionately affects Hispanic families and remains an unresolved public health concern. Interventions to enhance health-related parenting practices may be a promising strategy to lower the risk for childhood obesity. However, there are scarce data on which parenting practices would be culturally relevant and contribute to lower the risk for childhood obesity among Hispanic families in the United States.

We assessed the association between educational aspirations and the intention to migrate among 1,446 adolescents aged 11-17 years, living in semi-urban/rural communities in Jalisco, Mexico. Analyses rely on survey data from the Family Migration and Early Life Outcomes study. The outcome variable was the intention to migrate, a three-category variable coded as no intention to migrate, intention to migrate within Mexico, and intention to migrate internationally.

Parents play a significant role in adolescent health behaviors; however, few nutrition interventions for Hispanic adolescents involve parents. This study assessed the effects of a 10-week parenting intervention simultaneously targeting nutrition and substance use prevention. Hispanic parent/6th-8th-grade adolescent dyads (n = 239) were randomized to Families Preparing the New Generation Plus (FPNG+; nutrition/substance use prevention), FPNG (substance use prevention only), or Realizing the American Dream (RAD; academic success control).

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed whether culturally and linguistically adapted versions of the US adolescent substance use prevention program, keepin' it REAL (kiREAL), effectively increased drug resistance strategies among Mexican students and if this led to reduced substance use.
  • Over 5,500 middle school students were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a culturally adapted version (MREAL), a linguistically adapted version (kiREAL-S), and a control group, with data collected at multiple intervals.
  • Results showed that both MREAL and kiREAL-S improved the use of drug resistance strategies, but only MREAL led to a significant reduction in the frequency of substance use behaviors, highlighting the importance of cultural adaptation in prevention programs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the crucial role of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in assisting underserved Latinx communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in Arizona, where they were integral to a state-wide testing initiative.* -
  • Through interviews and focus groups, three main themes emerged: CHWs served as community bridges, navigated communication challenges, and faced both satisfaction and frustration in their dual roles as community advocates and undervalued public health workers.* -
  • The findings advocate for the continued integration of CHWs into the healthcare system, suggesting increased budget and training resources to recognize their contributions beyond temporary pandemic efforts.*

Background: Breastfeeding offers the best nutrition during the first months of life. Scholars have identified a dose-response association between breastfeeding duration and reduced risk for child morbidity and mortality. In upper-middle-income countries, including Mexico, maternal employment has been negatively associated with breastfeeding duration.

Background: Globally, the prevalence of child stunting has been decreasing over the past decades. However, in low- and middle-income countries such as Mexico, stunting is still the most prevalent form of undernutrition affecting a large number of children in the most vulnerable conditions. Breastfeeding has been identified as one of the key affordable and modifiable maternal health behaviors protecting against child stunting.

This work aimed to assess the clonal distribution among 94 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from cow's milk, raw cheese, and a milking machine in 12 dairy farms in northeast Brazil, by analyzing different typing methods and detecting resistance and toxigenic profiles. For the first time, isolates of this region were assessed simultaneously by the polymorphism of the 3'-end coa gene and 16S-23S rDNA, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, antibiotic resistance phenotyping, and toxigenic arsenal. Although pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns showed a wider variation (discriminatory index 0.

Objective: This study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravaginal administration of glyceryl trinitrate plus dinoprostone versus dinoprostone, for cervical ripening and induction of labor.

Study Design: A prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial was conducted among 196 singleton low-risk nullipara women with term pregnancies and unfavorable cervices who were randomly assigned to receive intravaginal glyceryl trinitrate plus dinoprostone or placebo plus dinoprostone. The main outcome variables were time from application to active phase of labor and to delivery.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of the therapy with high-dose corticoids on the clinical and laboratory evolution of HELLP syndrome.

Study Design: We reviewed all the cases of pregnancy complicated with HELLP, admitted to the Garcia de Orta Hospital from 1993 to 2000. We compared the patients without corticosteroid therapy or with a standard corticosteroid regimen for promotion of fetal lung maturation--group 1, with the patients who received dexamethasone (10 mg intramuscular every 12 hours)--group 2.
