To identify clusters of autoantibodies in a large cSLE population and to verify possible associations between different autoantibody clusters and the following variables: demographic data, cumulative clinical and laboratory manifestations, disease activity, cumulative damage and mortality. A cross-sectional study was performed in 27 Pediatric Rheumatology University centers, including 912 cSLE patients. The frequencies of seven selected autoantibodies (anti-dsDNA, anti-Ro/SSA, anti-La/SSB, anti-Sm, anti-RNP, aCL IgM and/or IgG and LA) were used for cluster analysis using the K-means method.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify factors associated with mortality in pediatric patients with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) by analyzing clinical data and determining frequent causes of death.
  • Researchers reviewed medical records of 1,528 cSLE patients from 27 centers in Brazil and found that 63 patients died, primarily due to sepsis and opportunistic infections, with significant mortality risks linked to neuropsychiatric lupus and chronic kidney disease.
  • Although the overall survival rates for cSLE patients after diagnosis were high (97% at 5 years), the findings highlight the need for better management of high-risk conditions in these patients.

Objective: To evaluate if the 2019-European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology (EULAR/ACR) criteria at diagnosis of childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) are associated with higher rates of early damage scored by Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology (SLICC/ACR) Damage Index (SDI).

Methods: This retrospective multicenter study included 670 cSLE patients with ≤5 years of disease duration. All patients fulfilled both 2019-EULAR/ACR and 1997-ACR classification criteria.

Objective: To evaluate symptomatic polyautoimmunity (PA) at childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus(cSLE) diagnosis, and its association with demographic data, disease activity, clinical manifestations and laboratorial abnormalities in a large Brazilian cSLE population.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was performed in 1463 cSLE(ACR criteria) patients from 27 Pediatric Rheumatology services. Symptomatic PA was defined according to the presence of more than one concomitant autoimmune disease(AD) and symptomatic multiple autoimmune syndrome(MAS) was defined as three or more AD.

Objective: To evaluate maternal and neonatal outcomes in patients before and after a diagnosis of Takayasu arteritis (TA).

Methods: Patients diagnosed with TA according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria were selected from the Vasculitis Outpatient Clinic of the Rheumatology Division. Healthy female staff members of this hospital of similar age and educational level were selected as the controls.

The adolescent athletes are at greater risk of low back pain and structural spine injuries. Spondylolysis is responsible for the majority of back pain cases in young athletes, rarely occurring in adults. We report a case of a 13-year-old judo female athlete, who came to our service with 5 months of progressive low back pain during training which was initially attributed to mechanical causes, without any further investigation by imaging methods.

Cutaneous mucinosis is a group of conditions involving an accumulation of mucin or glycosaminoglycan in the skin and its annexes. It is described in some connective tissue diseases but never in association with mixed connective tissue disease. This report concerns two cases of cutaneous mucinosis in patients with mixed connective tissue disease in remission; one patient presented the papular form, and the other reticular erythematous mucinosis.
