In this work bleached E. globulus kraft pulp was doped with polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) from an aqueous solution or from a suspension of silica capsules (PHMB@silica) by impregnation under atmospheric or ultra-high pressure (UHP) conditions (500MPa). The antimicrobial properties of pulps were evaluated towards gram-negative E.

Industrially produced bleached recycled pulp (R) comprising essentially hardwood fibres was subjected to enzymatic treatment with endo-xylanase from Thermomyces lanuginosus with or without ultra-high hydrostatic pressure (UHP) pre-treatment at 300-600 MPa for 10 min. The kinetics and the extent of enzymatic hydrolysis after UHP pre-treatment under different conditions have been evaluated by released reducing sugars and the analysis of neutral sugars in pulps, respectively. The changes in surface chemical composition of pulps were assessed by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.

Thermal and mechanical analyses of the composites revealed that the Au NPs reinforce the structure of the hydrogel and the mechanism of gel reinforcement is discussed. The effect of the NPs on the microstructure and strength of the hydrogel had implications in the mechanism of controlled release as demonstrated by in vitro release studies using a drug model (methylene blue: MB).

We show that a secreted Bmp antagonist Cerberus homologue (Cer1) fine tunes the organization of the ureteric tree during organogenesis in the mouse embryo. Both enhanced ureteric expression of Cer1 and Cer1 knock out enlarge kidney size, and these changes are associated with an altered three-dimensional structure of the ureteric tree as revealed by optical projection tomography.

EGF-CFC proteins are important components of the Nodal signaling pathway, most likely by acting as Nodal coreceptors. However, the extent to which Nodal activity depends on EGF-CFC proteins is still debated.
