Article Synopsis
- Seagrass meadows are being recognized as significant areas for the accumulation of microplastics and anthropogenic microparticles (APs), as confirmed by a study conducted in a tropical estuary in Brazil.
- The study found APs in 80% of sediment samples with an average of 142 particles per kg, predominantly blue fibers smaller than 1 mm, showing no significant differences between seagrass and unvegetated areas throughout different seasons.
- Importantly, this research is the first to document AP contamination in seagrass species in the Tropical Southwestern Atlantic region, revealing a connection between sediment grain size and the abundance of these particles.
