We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and characterisation of a dinuclear Co(II) compound with thiodiacetate (tda) and phenanthroline (phen) as ligands (1), and of a series of metal complexes isomorphous to 1 with different Co : Zn ratios (2, 4 : 1; 3, 1 : 1; 4, 1 : 4; 5, 1 : 10). General characterisation methodologies and X-ray data showed that all the synthesised complexes are isomorphous to Zn(II) and Cu(II) analogues (CSD codes: DUHXEL and BEBQII). 1 consists of centrosymmetric Co(II) ion dimers in which the ions are 3.

Parasitic diseases have a major impact on human and animal health worldwide. Despite the availability of effective anti-parasitic drugs, their excessive and uncontrolled use has promoted the emergence of drug resistance, severely affecting ecosystems and human health. Thus, developing environmentally friendly antiparasitic treatments is urgently needed.

This work describes the synthesis of 4-(4-AcPy) and 3-acetylpyridine (3-AcPy) copper soluble complexes for the activation of hydrogen peroxide and the concomitant generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Given the paramagnetic effects of copper ions in the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) lines, we aimed at demonstrating that the combination of high-resolution 2D solid-state NMR experiments, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), single-crystal X-ray crystallography and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations allows a detailed study of the chemical structure of the ligands and the surrounding metal ions. The copper complexes synthesized with CuCl were useful for the activation of H O during which the only ROS was the hydroxyl one, as demonstrated by EPR experiments.

The complex chemical functionalization of aldehyde moieties in Cu(ii)- and Co(ii)-pyridinecarboxaldehyde complexes was studied. X-ray studies demonstrated that the aldehyde group (RHO) of the four pyridine molecules is converted to dihydrogen ester (R(OCH)(OH)) and hemiacetal (RH(OH)(OCH)) moieties in both 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde copper and cobalt complexes. In contrast, the aldehyde group is retained when the 3-pyridinecarboxaldehyde ligand is complexed with cobalt.

We report the development of a new analytical method for the quantification of N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine (glyphosate) and (aminomethyl)phosphonic acid (AMPA) by combining spectrofluorimetry and multivariate calibration. In this study, fluorescence spectroscopy was used to quantify glyphosate and AMPA, which were previously derivatized with the fluorogenic reagent: 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan (NBD-Cl). Fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEM) were recorded by exciting between 400 and 500 nm, and measuring the emission between 500 and 610 nm.

5-Hydroxy-L-tryptophan (5-HTP) is a serotonin pathway metabolite of L-tryptophan in the brain. In the knowledge that the biological properties of some compounds can be modified upon metal complexation, a new solid metal complex, [Cu(5-hydroxytryptophan)].HO (Cu5HTP), has been synthesized and characterized to analyze the modification of some biological properties.

A collection of 32 structurally related -(4-halobenzyl)amides were synthesized from cinnamic and benzoic acids through coupling reactions with 4-halobenzylamines, using (benzotriazol-1-yloxy)tris(dimethylamino)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate (BOP) as a coupling agent. The compounds were identified by spectroscopic methods such as infrared, ¹H- and C- Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The compounds were then submitted to antimicrobial tests by the minimum inhibitory concentration method (MIC) and nystatin was used as a control in the antifungal assays.

Based on the known antioxidant effect of flavonoids, baicalin (baic) found in roots of Scutellaria has been selected. Its coordination complex with the oxidovanadium(IV) cation, Na[VO(baic)].6HO (VO(baic)), was synthesized at pH9 in ethanol and characterized by physicochemical methods.

In view of the limitations of antifungal agents used in the treatment of oral candidiasis and the wide variety of natural products that have been studied as treatment of this disease, this systematic literature review proposed to evaluate whether scientific evidence attesting to the efficacy of natural products in the treatment of this disease exists. A systematic search in PubMed, MEDLINE, SciELO, Lilacs, and Cochrane Library databases was accomplished using the associations among the keywords Candida albicans, phytotherapy, biological products, denture stomatitis, and oral candidiasis in both English and Portuguese. Four independent observers evaluated the methodological quality of the resulting articles.
