Common variable immunodeficiency is a heterogeneous symptomatic group of inborn errors of immunity that mainly affects antibodies production and/or function, predisposing patients to recurrent and severe infections. More than half of them usually develop autoimmunity, lymphoproliferation, enteropathy, and malignancies. Among these conditions, chronic lung disease such as granulomatous-lymphocytic interstitial lung disease is one of the leading causes of death in these patients.

Objective: To describe the patterns of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) occurrence in children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) across several Latin American pediatric diabetes centers from 2018 to 2022.
Methods: A retrospective chart review included children under 18 with new-onset T1DM from 30 Latin American pediatric diabetes centers (Argentina, Chile, and Peru) between 30 December 2018 and 30 December 2022. Multiple logistic regression models examined the relationships between age, gender, medical insurance, BMI, and DKA at new-onset T1DM.
Background: Preoperative exercise training is recommended for improvement of clinical outcomes after lung cancer (LC) surgery. However, its effectiveness in preventing postoperative decline in quality of life (QoL) remains unknown. This study investigated the effect of preoperative home-based exercise training (PHET) on QoL after LC surgery.

All participant services in this study use thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD) systems except one that uses optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosemeters. Data analysis shows that 93.

However, the lack of access to facility-based exercise programs is a major barrier to routine participation. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of a home-based exercise intervention before lung cancer resection.

Ectopic thyroid tissue has malignant potential, but ectopic thyroid cancers are extremely rare, particularly mediastinal thyroid cancer, with only five cases reported in the literature.
Case Presentation: A 73 years-old male patient diagnosed with multinodular goitre with two FLUS cytology was summited to an uneventful total thyroidectomy.
Background: We investigated the relationship between maternal smoking in pregnancy and health care problems in the offspring during the first year of life, particularly asthma.
Material And Methods: A cohort of 648 consecutive infants born at term and alive at Hospital de Sagunto (Valencia, Spain) over one year period was followed for 12 months. Clinical data of the infants were prospectively collected from the database of ambulatory medical records (ABUCASIS) of the Valencia health system.
Introduction: The Accelerated Development of VAccine beNefit-risk Collaboration in Europe (ADVANCE) is a public private collaboration aiming to develop and test a system for rapid benefit-risk (B/R) monitoring of vaccines, using existing electronic healthcare record (eHR) databases in Europe. Part of the data in such sources is missing due to incomplete follow-up hampering the accurate estimation of vaccination coverage. We compared different methods for coverage estimation from eHR databases; naïve period prevalence, complete case period prevalence, period prevalence adjusted for follow-up time, Kaplan-Meier (KM) analysis and (adjusted) inverse probability weighing (IPW).

The Candiota coalfield in Rio Grande do Sul, is one of the largest open-cast coal mines in Brazil. The aim of this study was to evaluate genotoxic and mutagenic effects of coal, bottom ash and fly ash samples from Candiota with the comet assay (alkaline and modified version) and micronucleus test using the lung fibroblast cell line (V79).

Objectives: Explore a new target for molecular diagnosis of Leishmania.
Materials And Methods: We evaluated the utility of the gene that encodes the heat shock protein 20-kDa (Hsp20) for detecting Leishmania by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR was normalized and analytical parameters were determined, as well as the validity and diagnostic accuracy, and concordance with the PCR - 18S.
Objectives: The timing for mitral valve (MV) surgery in asymptomatic patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR) and preserved left ventricular (LV) function remains controversial. We aimed at analysing the long-term outcome of asymptomatic patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and/or pulmonary hypertension (PHT) after successful MV repair.
Methods: From January 1992 to December 2012, 382 patients with severe degenerative MR, with no or mild symptoms, preserved LV function (ejection fraction > 60%) and LV systolic dimensions <45 mm were submitted to surgery and followed up for up to 22 years (3209 patient-years).
Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPSI) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding the lysosomal enzyme α-l-iduronidase (IDUA), which is instrumental in the hydrolysis of the glycosaminoglycans, dermatan and heparan sulfate. The accumulation of unhydrolyzed glycosaminoglycans leads to pathogenesis in multiple tissue types, especially those of skeletal, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal origin. Although molecular diagnostic tools for MPSI have been available since the identification and characterization of the IDUA gene in 1992, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru have lacked such methodologies.

Methods: From January 1992 to December 2012, 382 consecutive patients with severe chronic degenerative mitral regurgitation, with no or mild symptoms, and preserved left ventricular function (ejection fraction ≥ 60%) were submitted to surgery and followed for up to 22 years (3209 patient-years).
Arrabidaea chica Verlot (Bignoniaceae) is an important folk medicine plant native to the Amazon region and used to treat anemia, hemorrhage, inflammation, intestinal colic, hepatitis, and skin affections. Although studies showed its therapeutic properties, little knowledge regarding genotoxic properties of this plant is available. The aim of this study was to determine the potential mutagenic and genotoxic/antigenotoxic effects of an A.

Initially hospitalized with a diagnosis of pneumonia and bronchitis, the patient had numerous cutaneous and mucosal lesions caused by Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis. The patient was also diagnosed as severely immunocompromised because of HIV infection.
