The Peruvian fauna of aquatic and semiaquatic bugs comprises 233 species, representing 70 genera, 15 tribes, 29 subfamilies, and 16 families. Many of these species (22%) are endemic to the country, while 49% occur in Peru and other South American countries, 21% are found throughout the Neotropics, and 8% are widely distributed in the Americas. These proportions are similar among the three infraorders treated here.

Simulium wygodzinskyorum Coscarón & Py-Daniel was originally described based on a small number of specimens collected in Junín Province, Peru. We sampled in the same province as the type locality of this species, collecting last-instar larvae and pupae. Since the original larval description of this species was based on a single immature individual, our objective is to provide a last-instar larval description and also to provide additional morphological information on the pupa and male genitalia of this species.
