In 1937, Ugo Cerletti and Lucio Bini performed electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) in Rome for the first time. That was the time when different types of 'shock therapy' were performed; beside ECT, insulin therapies, cardiazol shock therapy, etc. were also performed.

Freeze-dried meningococcal vaccine: Total error assessment of a near-infrared method for water content determination.

Accuracy of reference values obtained by the reference method is essential to ensure the quality of a near-infrared (NIR) model. The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of a newly developed NIR analytical method for the determination of water content in a freeze-dried meningococcal vaccine by evaluating not only uncertainties associated with the calibration model and NIR measurement procedures but also systematic error arising from the reference Karl-Fischer method. An experimental design based on the standard addition method (SAM) in freeze-dried vaccines is proposed for total error assessment of the NIR analytical system.

Service quality and maturity of health care organizations through the lens of Complexity Leadership Theory.

Rationale, Aims And Objectives: This research focuses on Complexity Leadership Theory and the relationship between leadership-examined through the lens of Complexity Leadership Theory-and organizational maturity as an indicator of the performance of health organizations.

Methods: The research adopts a perspective that conceptualizes organizations as complex adaptive systems and draws upon a survey of opinion of 189 managers working in Serbian health organizations.

Results And Conclusions: As the results indicate a dependency between functions of leadership and levels of the maturity of health organizations, we propose a model that connects the two.

Positive end-expiratory pressure lung recruitment: comparison between lower inflection point and ultrasound assessment.

Background: Maintenance of the open lung alveoli in the expiration on mechanical ventilation in acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS) remains challenging despite advances in lung imaging. The inspiratory lower inflection point (LIP) on the ventilator pressure-volume (P-V) curve estimates the required end-expiratory pressure for recruitment of alveolar consolidation. Alternatively, the end-expiratory pressure for recruitment of crater-like subpleural alveolar consolidation could be simply followed with ultrasound.

Anesthetic management of patients undergoing pituitary surgery.

Pituitary tumors account for more than 10% of all intracranial tumors. They often present with symptoms of hormonal hypersecretion, although they may also cause hypopituitarism. Transsphenoidal pituitary surgery has become a commonly performed neurosurgical procedure, which has certain challenges for the anesthesiologist due to many distinct comorbidities associated with various adenomas.
