Article Synopsis
  • There is a growing need for more long-term studies using the Aptima HPV test (AHPV) to ensure its safety for extended screening intervals, with REINA providing key insights into its clinical performance.
  • This study involved 1,538 participants who underwent AHPV and liquid-based cytology (LBC) co-testing, revealing that AHPV has higher sensitivity and negative predictive value compared to LBC, leading to significantly lower risks for developing severe cervical conditions over 9 years.
  • The findings support using AHPV for longer screening intervals beyond 5 years, demonstrating a strong protective effect from previous negative results and potentially reducing unnecessary treatments and referrals.

Article Synopsis
  • - Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces (RPNIs) utilize nerve grafts to enhance electrical signaling in peripheral nerves, and this study reviewed existing research on RPNIs using animal models from 1970 to 2023.
  • - A total of 104 articles on RPNIs were analyzed, with 35 specifically focusing on animal studies, predominantly using mice (91%) and a smaller number using macaques (9%).
  • - Key findings showed significant axonal regeneration and improved blood vessel formation, with RPNIs effectively able to detect and amplify nerve signals, indicating promising long-term performance that can guide future research.

Early stages are under-represented in studies on the molecular and immune features of high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC), and specific studies focused on early-stage HGSOC are required for a better prognostic stratification and to personalize chemotherapy. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic significance of CD8+ and CD4+ tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), tumoral cell PD-L1 expression, mutational status and tumor mutation burden (TMB) in early-stage HGSOC. A retrospective study was performed on stage I and II HGSOC from the Molecular Reclassification of Early Stages of Ovarian Cancer (RECLAMO) cohort from the Spanish Group of Ovarian Cancer Research (GEICO).

Background: Several studies have reported the association of germline BRCA2 (gBRCA2) mutations with poor clinical outcomes in prostate cancer (PCa), but the impact of concurrent somatic events on gBRCA2 carriers survival and disease progression is unknown.

Patients And Methods: To ascertain the role of frequent somatic genomic alterations and histology subtypes in the outcomes of gBRCA2 mutation carriers and non-carriers, we correlated the tumour characteristics and clinical outcomes of 73 gBRCA2 and 127 non-carriers. Fluorescent in-situ hybridisation and next-generation sequencing were used to detect copy number variations in BRCA2, RB1, MYC and PTEN.

Background: Intraductal (IDC) and cribriform (CRIB) histologies in prostate cancer have been associated with germline BRCA2 (gBRCA2) mutations in small retrospective series, leading to the recommendation of genetic testing for patients with IDC in the primary tumour.

Patients And Methods: To examine the association of gBRCA2 mutations and other tumour molecular features with IDC and/or cribriform (CRIB) histologies, we conducted a case-control study in which primary prostate tumours from 58 gBRCA2 carriers were matched (1:2) by Gleason Grade Group and specimen type to 116 non-carriers. Presence/absence of IDC and CRIB morphologies was established by two expert uropathologists blinded to gBRCA2 status.

Endometrioid ovarian carcinoma (EOC) has clinical and biological differences compared with other histologic types of ovarian carcinomas, but it shares morphologic and molecular features with endometrioid endometrial carcinoma. To analyze the molecular heterogeneity of EOC according to the new molecular classification of endometrial cancer and to evaluate the prognostic significance of this molecular classification, we have analyzed 166 early-stage EOC by immunohistochemistry for mismatch repair proteins and p53 expression, and by Sanger sequencing for the exonuclease domain of polymerase epsilon (POLE EDM). In addition, we have carried out next-generation sequencing analysis of tumors with POLE EDM mutations to confirm the ultramutated profile.

Mismatch repair deficiency (MMRD) is involved in the initiation of both hereditary and sporadic tumors. MMRD has been extensively studied in colorectal cancer and endometrial cancer, but not so in other tumors, such as ovarian carcinoma. We have determined the expression of mismatch repair proteins in a large cohort of 502 early-stage epithelial ovarian carcinoma entailing all the 5 main subtypes: high-grade serous carcinoma, endometrioid ovarian carcinoma (EOC), clear cell carcinoma (CCC), mucinous carcinoma, and low-grade serous carcinoma.

The frequency and prognostic significance of the histologic type in early-stage ovarian cancer (OC) is not as well established as in advanced stages. In addition, histologic typing based only on morphologic features may be difficult, especially in high-grade tumors. In this study, we have analyzed a prospective cohort of 502 early-stage OCs to investigate their frequency, immunohistochemical characteristics, and survival of the 5 main histologic types.

When a patient with a previous history of neoplasm presents with a thyroid lesion, the possibility of it being metastatic should always be considered. In this series, we present the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of the thyroid metastases diagnosed in our department over the past 30 years. Here we present eight thyroidal metastases from clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCCC), including a tumor to tumor metastasis, the patients being 2 men and 6 women with a median age of 62 years.

In this article we present the case and images of an infrequent submucosal gastric tumor: an inflammatory fibroid polyp or Vanek´s tumor. When the tumor size exceeds the centimeter, it may be difficult to differentiate from malignant lesions. Endoscopic removal may be feasible and curative.

Uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex cord tumors are rare neoplasms of unknown etiology that are classified as distinct from endometrial stromal tumors on the basis of their morphologic, molecular, and behavioral characteristics. These neoplasms have a variable immunophenotype, sometimes coexpressing epithelial, myoid, and sex cord markers. To date, only 2 cases of uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex cord tumors associated with tamoxifen use have been reported.
