Background: Primary health care is the gateway to low back pain (LBP) management. Effective management of LBP can reduce disability and socioeconomic burden. Standardised, accurate, and evidence-based information for assertive decision-making in care pathways for LBP has the potential to improve health service efficiency.

Biochemical and histological effects of the subchronic treatment with a beer containing Baccharis dracunculifolia in an experimental model of diabetes.

This article reports the development of a beer made with Baccharis dracunculifolia and its application in an experimental model of diabetes. Initially, the production of the beverage was standardized in order to incorporate the plant extract properly. Next, the beer was analyzed by the UHPLC-MS to identify the substances present.

Long COVID is not the same for everyone: a hierarchical cluster analysis of Long COVID symptoms 9 and 12 months after SARS-CoV-2 test.

Background: Identifying symptom clusters in Long COVID is necessary for developing effective therapies for this diverse condition and improving the quality of life of those affected by this heterogeneous condition. In this study, we aimed to identify and compare symptom clusters at 9 and 12 months after a SARS-CoV-2 positive test and describe each cluster regarding factors at infection.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with individuals randomly selected from the Portuguese National System of Epidemiological Surveillance (SINAVE) database.

Introduction: Health literacy among migrants is a matter of public health and social justice. Migrants from diverse backgrounds encounter challenges such as linguistic barriers, cultural disparities, restricted access to health services, and heterogeneous migration statuses. Addressing these challenges requires careful consideration of their unique experiences and needs to promote equitable health outcomes.

Predictive value of functional disability scales among stroke survivors: A long-term mortality evaluation in a Brazilian stroke cohort.

Objective: To assess the influence of two functional scales- Modified Rankin Scale (m-RS) and Modified Katz Index (m-Katz Index) on long-term mortality in a stroke cohort.

Material And Methods: Among 760 stroke survivors (median age: 66 (IQR:56-75), 56.4 % women) m-Katz Index and m-RS scales applied at 1 and 6 months after stroke, were investigated in relation to 12-years of all-cause mortality.

Several migrant populations have been identified worldwide as high-risk groups for psychosis because of their experience of social adversity. Pregnancy-lactation cycle: how to use imaging methods for breast evaluation.

Pregnancy and lactation constitute states of intense hormonal variation with secretory and structural changes in the breast parenchyma. These changes translate into important features on breast imaging, as well as the emergence of specific benign and malignant lesions. This literature review aims to discuss the safety of the use of breast imaging methods (mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging) during the pregnancy-lactation cycle, and to present the expected physiological changes and imaging appearance of the main breast diseases that may occur in this period, such as galactocele, lactating adenoma, fibroadenoma, puerperal mastitis, and pregnancy-associated breast cancer.

A reversible case of rapidly progressive dementia-Hypercalcemia due to hyperparathyroidism.

With an increasingly aging population, it is of extreme importance to exclude potentially reversible dementias, such as hyperparathyroidism with hypercalcemia, in the differential diagnosis of a rapidly progressive dementia. According to literature, this entity is undervalued and it is highly relevant to be aware of it.

Effect of Aerobic Exercise on Peak Oxygen Consumption, VE/VCO Slope, and Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Purpose Of Review: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of aerobic exercise on peak oxygen uptake (peak VO), minute ventilation/carbon dioxide production (VE/VCO slope), and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with heart failure (HF) and preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

Recent Findings: We conducted a Cochrane Library, MEDLINE/PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, and SciELO search (from 1985 to May 2019) for randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effects of aerobic exercise in HFpEF patients. We calculated the mean differences (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI).

Retrospective analysis of computed tomography-guided percutaneous nephrostomies in cancer patients.

Objective: To establish an overview of computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous nephrostomy performed at a referral center for cancer, addressing the characteristics of patients submitted to this intervention, as well as the indications for it, the technical specificities of it, and its main complications.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective study involving a review of the electronic medical records and images of patients submitted to CT-guided percutaneous nephrostomy at a referral center for cancer between 2014 and 2016.

Results: A total of 201 procedures were evaluated.

Late Hospital Arrival for Thrombolysis after Stroke in Southern Portugal: Who Is at Risk?

Background: Delayed hospital arrival remains the main reason for the low rates of thrombolysis in eligible acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients. The role of socioeconomic and clinical factors for the prehospital delay of AIS remains poor and has never been studied in Portugal.

Objectives: Describe the socioeconomic and clinical factors leading to delayed hospital admission of AIS patients eligible to thrombolysis.

Metastatic clear cell renal carcinoma to the auricular region disguised as a vascular thrombus: Case report.

In about 25-30% of patients with primary renal cell carcinoma, metastasis is not uncommon and usually does not give rise to difficulties in diagnosis. However, its presentation as a subcutaneous mass following an elapse of several years after the initial diagnosis is not only uncommon but may be also mistaken for a thrombus in imaging studies due to its common high vascularization. We present here a case of a 70-year-old woman with an oncologic history of renal cell carcinoma who noticed after five years a mass in the auricular region radiologically suggestive of a vascular thrombus.

Pharmacokinetics comparison of two pegylated interferon alfa formulations in healthy volunteers.

Background: Several countries have used pegylation technology to improve the pharmacokinetic properties of essential drugs. Recently, a novel interferon alfa-2b protein conjugated to four-branched 12 kDa polyethylene glycol molecules was developed jointly between Cuba and Brazil. The aim of this study was to compare the pharmacokinetic properties of BIP48 (pegylated interferon alfa-2b from Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz, Brazil) to those of PEGASYS® (commercially available pegylated interferon alfa-2a from Roche Pharmaceutical).

Rheumatoid arthritis and sleep quality.

Background: Sleep disturbances are common in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and contribute to loss of life quality.

Objective: To study associations of sleep quality with pain, depression and disease activity in RA.

Methods: This is a transversal observational study of 112 RA patients submitted to measurement of DAS-28, Epworth scale for daily sleepiness, index of sleep quality by Pittsburg index, risk of sleep apnea by the Berlin questionnaire and degree of depression by the CES-D (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale) questionnaire.

Keratitis due to microfilariae in dogs: a newly recognized disease.

Parasitic agents have been associated with keratitis, but a diagnosis of parasitic keratitis has not been commonly made in domestic animals. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and histopathological findings in seven dogs with chronic keratitis caused by microfilariae diagnosed in Brazil. All dogs presented with superficial corneal opacities of varying degrees affecting the perilimbal and central regions of the cornea, with other opaque areas appearing as crystalline deposits and corneal vascularization.
