The aim of this study was to identify the association between four selected inflammatory polymorphisms with the development of long-term post-COVID symptoms in subjects who had been hospitalized due to SARS-CoV-2 infection during the first wave of the pandemic. These polymorphisms were selected as they are associated with severe COVID-19 disease and cytokine storm, so they could be important to prognoses post-COVID. A total of 408 (48.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the hypothesis that viral persistence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA may explain post-COVID symptoms by analyzing various bodily samples from patients experiencing these symptoms.
  • A systematic review of literature yielded six relevant studies out of 322 identified, involving 678 COVID-19 survivors, with mixed methodological quality across the studies.
  • Preliminary findings suggest SARS-CoV-2 RNA might persist in patients with post-COVID symptoms shortly after infection; however, biases and lack of a control group restrict the ability to draw definitive conclusions about this persistence.

Article Synopsis
  • The review explores whether antiviral medications given during the acute phase of COVID-19 can help reduce the risk of developing long-COVID symptoms.
  • A comprehensive search of various medical databases identified 7 relevant studies, with high methodological quality in most.
  • The findings are mixed, with some antivirals like Remdesivir showing potential benefits, while other drugs like Dexamethasone and Metformin also showed promise, though more research is necessary to make definitive conclusions.

Objective: Evidence suggests that individuals who had survived to coronavirus disease, 2019 (COVID-19) could develop neuropathic post-COVID pain. This study investigated the association of serological biomarkers and treatments received during hospitalization with development of neuropathic-associated symptoms.

Methods: One hundred and eighty-three ( = 183) previously hospitalized COVID-19 survivors during the first wave of the pandemic were assessed in a face-to-face interview 9.

Current evidence suggests that a group of patients who had survived coronavirus disease, 2019 (COVID-19) and developed post-COVID pain can exhibit altered nociceptive processing. The role of serological biomarkers and hospitalization treatments in post-COVID pain is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association of serological biomarkers and treatments received during hospitalization with sensitization-associated symptoms in COVID-19 survivors with post-COVID pain.

The value of serial lung ultrasound (LUS) in patients with COVID-19 is not well defined. In this multicenter prospective observational study, we aimed to assess the prognostic accuracy of serial LUS in patients admitted to hospital due to COVID-19. The serial LUS protocol included two examinations (0-48 h and 72-96 h after admission) using a 10-zones sequence, and a 0 to 5 severity score.

Background: Incidence of thrombotic events associated to Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is difficult to assess and reported rates differ significantly. Optimal thromboprophylaxis is unclear.

Objectives: We aimed to analyze the characteristics of patients with a confirmed thrombotic complication including inflammatory and hemostatic parameters, compare patients affected by arterial vs venous events and examine differences between survivors and non-survivors.

The relationship between cancer and microbes is complex and not entirely known. The objective of this manuscript is to review the scientific evidence on the relationship between the microbiome, cancer and immunotherapy. A non-systematic literature review was done in the databases MEDLINE, COCHRANE, and DATABASE, and articles of greater scientific rigor, mainly reviews or prospective studies/randomized clinical trials published to date (May 2018), were selected.

Thymic carcinomas are the most aggressive histological subtype of thymic tumors with limited data to guide correct management. No standard treatments are available for patients with advanced thymic carcinoma after progressing while on platinum-based chemotherapy. We present a case of a patient with metastatic thymic carcinoma with an unusual response and favorable evolution after receiving treatment with sunitinib, obtaining a progression-free survival of 23 months, much higher than reported to date.

Vitamin K antagonists were the only choice for chronic oral anticoagulation for more than half a century. Over the past few years, direct oral anticoagulants have emerged, including one direct thrombin inhibitor (dabigatran etexilate) and three factor Xa inhibitors (apixaban, edoxaban and rivaroxaban). In randomised controlled trials comparing direct oral anticoagulants with traditional vitamin K antagonists, the direct oral anticoagulants all showed a favourable benefit-risk balance in their safety and efficacy profile, in prevention of thromboembolic events in patients with atrial fibrillation and in the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism and acute coronary syndrome.

There are no approved therapeutic regimes for adrenal carcinoma following progression to a first line of chemotherapy/mitotane although a high percentage of patients are candidates to receive them. In the present article we review the possible therapeutic alternatives after the progression to a first line of treatment in patients with adrenal carcinoma and we report a case in which a prolonged overall survival is achieved, much higher than expected, probably in relation to the multidisciplinary management of the case and the use of most of the therapeutic arsenal available.

Aim: Hospitalization of elderly people is often followed by high mortality rates. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of prior residence on 1-year mortality after hospital discharge in patients aged 70 years and over.

Methods: This was a prospective observational cohort study.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Ana Franco-Moreno"

  • - Ana Franco-Moreno's recent research primarily focuses on the long-term effects of COVID-19, including post-COVID symptoms and the potential efficacy of antiviral treatments during the acute phase of the infection.
  • - Key findings from her studies indicate that inflammatory polymorphisms are not significantly associated with post-COVID symptoms in previously hospitalized patients, and also that serological biomarkers and hospitalization treatments do not correlate with sensitization-associated symptoms in COVID-19 survivors.
  • - Her systematic reviews explore the persistence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in individuals experiencing post-COVID symptoms, emphasizing the complexity of long-COVID and the need for further investigation into viral persistence and treatment efficacy.
