Background: In 2017, a mumps outbreak occurred in a US military barracks. Serum collected at service entry was used to compare pre-exposure with presumptive vaccine-induced antibody levels from persons who developed mumps (cases) and potentially exposed persons who did not develop mumps (non-cases). Military physicians are required to not only meet civilian accreditation standards upon completion of their Graduate Medical Education (GME) training programs but also be proficient in the military-unique aspects of their field, including medical care in austere environments and management of combat casualties. They must also be familiar with the administrative and leadership aspects of military medicine, which are often absent from the training curriculum. Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis is a mycotic disease caused by traumatic inoculation of the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii, found ubiquitously in decaying vegetation. The potential for outbreaks, difficulty with timely diagnosis, as well as the prolonged treatment course and recovery from surgical intervention can have a substantial impact on the medical readiness of service members. Background: Low vaccine effectiveness against A(H3N2) influenza in seasons with little antigenic drift has been attributed to substitutions in hemagglutinin (HA) acquired during vaccine virus propagation in eggs. Clinical trials comparing recombinant HA vaccine (rHA) and cell-derived inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) to egg-derived IIVs provide opportunities to assess how egg-adaptive substitutions influence HA immunogenicity.

Methods: Neutralization titers in pre- and postimmunization sera from 133 adults immunized with 1 of 3 types of influenza vaccines in a randomized, open-label trial during the 2018-2019 influenza season were measured against egg- and cell-derived A/Singapore/INFIMH-16-0019/2016-like and circulating A(H3N2) influenza viruses using HA pseudoviruses.
