Background: Nowadays, pharmacological treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is still limited and it is based on the treatment of conditions associated comorbities. Oxidative stress and insulin resistance are the mechanisms that seem to be mostly involved in its pathogenesis.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in combination with metformin (MTF) and/or ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) for treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Ana Cristina G Siqueira"

  • - Ana Cristina G Siqueira's research primarily focuses on the pharmacological treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its associated comorbidities, particularly through the lens of oxidative stress and insulin resistance as key pathological mechanisms.
  • - In her 2019 study, she conducted a multicenter randomized controlled trial assessing the effectiveness of combining N-acetylcysteine (NAC) with metformin (MTF) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
  • - The findings suggest that the combination therapy could offer a viable treatment approach for NASH, highlighting the need for more comprehensive pharmacological strategies to manage liver diseases related to metabolic syndromes.
