Porcine circovirus 2 and 3 (PCV2 and PCV3) and torque teno sus virus 1 and 2 (TTSuV1 and TTSuVk2) are important pathogens in pig associated with post-weaning mortality, different clinical syndromes in adults (PCVAD), and a decrease of average daily weight gain (PCV2-SI) but little is known about the infection on asymptomatic pigs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of PCV2, PCV3, TTSuV1, and TTSuVk2 in swine organ samples from asymptomatic pigs slaughtered in Espírito Santo State, South-eastern Brazil, through molecular detection and histopathological analysis. Nested PCR showed the presence of PCV2 DNA in 10% (14/140), PCV3 in 13.

Introduction: The search for an animal model capable of reproducing the physiopathology of the COVID-19, and also suitable for evaluating the efficacy and safety of new drugs has become a challenge for many researchers.

Areas Covered: This work reviews the current animal models for tests with SARS-CoV-2 as well as the challenges involved in the safety and efficacy trials.

Expert Opinion: Studies have reported the use of nonhuman primates, ferrets, mice, Syrian hamsters, lagomorphs, mink, and zebrafish in experiments that aimed to understand the course of COVID-19 or test vaccines and other drugs.

Simultaneous Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) and Torque teno sus virus (TTSuV) infections have been reported around the world, generally linked to severe infections. In the present study, 257 swine plasma samples from 31 swine herds located in Brazil, were PCR screened for PCV-2 and TTSuV-1/2 and correlated with clinical data. PCV-2 was detected in 25%, followed by 38.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Ana Claudia De Menezes Cruz"

  • - Ana Claudia De Menezes Cruz has focused her recent research on viral infections in swine, particularly the molecular detection of porcine circovirus types 2 and 3 (PCV2 and PCV3) and torque teno swine viruses (TTSuV1 and TTSuVk2), exploring their prevalence in asymptomatic pigs and their impact on health and weight gain in the breeding context in Brazil.
  • - Her studies revealed that significant percentages of swine tested positive for PCV2 and PCV3, highlighting the importance of these viruses in contributing to post-weaning mortality and clinical syndromes in pigs, while also noting the challenges in understanding infection dynamics in asymptomatic carriers.
  • - In addition to her work on swine viruses, Cruz has contributed to the understanding of animal models for SARS-CoV-2, reviewing the utility of various species in studying COVID-19 and testing treatments, thereby bridging veterinary research with broader public health implications.
