Purpose: Surgery of impacted lower third molars may be associated with postoperative complications. The aim of this study is to determine whether piezoelectric surgery is effective in reducing pain, swelling, and trismus compared to conventional rotary instruments during extraction of impacted lower third molars.

Methods: For this systematic review, the searches were performed independently by 2 researchers.

This systematic review was carried out to determine if maxillomandibular fixation, used in the treatment of maxillary fractures, interferes with respiratory function, and appraised studies that evaluated pulmonary function using spirometry on patients with and without maxillomandibular fixation. Searches were conducted on the following databases: Medline/Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, Scopus, and Scielo, in addition to a search of the grey literature and a manual search. Five studies were included in the qualitative analysis, but it was not possible to conduct a quantitative study due to the lack of data.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the connection between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in patients, aiming to assess their combined effects on psychological health, chronic pain, and daily functioning.
  • A total of 30 patients with AS were evaluated, most diagnosed with conventional AS (HLA-B27 positive), displaying significant disease activity and high functional disability scores.
  • The findings revealed that a majority suffered from TMD, resulting in moderate to severe chronic pain and negatively affecting their psychological well-being and functional abilities.

Introduction: Peripheral nerves transmit nerve signals between periphery and the spinal cord or brain stem. Its function can be compromised by trauma to the nerve, such as those that occur in surgical procedures such as orthognathic surgery. Depending on the type of injury, treatment may be proposed, but this is still a controversial point in literature.

Objective: To compare changes related to self-esteem and appearance satisfaction between pre and postsurgical phases in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery and to assess the quality of life and psychosocial changes of these patients six months after surgery.

Methods: A longitudinal observational qualitative study was performed. The sample comprised 15 patients with dentofacial deformities who underwent orthognathic surgery.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is an uncommon osteolytic lesion of the bones, usually affecting the long bones and spine. The lesion is rare in the jaws and is found most commonly in the body and ramus of the mandible. In some cases, ABCs may be present as rdestructive lesions simulating malignancies.

Objective: it was to evaluate intra- and interexaminer reliability and reproducibility of linear measurements in cone-beam tomography (CBCT) images.

Materials And Methods: CBCT scans were obtained from 50 patients of a private clinic. Two examiners located the landmarks twice in two-dimensional and three-dimensional images on different days, with images performed 1 week apart.

Background: Pain, swelling and trismus are undesirable effects of extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. The authors conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of the muscle relaxant cyclobenzaprine when used as a supplement to cryotherapeutic, antibiotic and steroidal anti-inflammatory treatment with the aim of reducing undesirable consequences after third-molar extraction.

Methods: The authors conducted a prospective, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 50 participants aged 18 to 29 years randomly assigned to receive cyclobenzaprine or the placebo.

Malignant tumours that have metastasized to the oral and maxillofacial region from distant sites account for only 1% of all malignancies of the jaw. These metastatic tumours are most often located in the mandible, and the majority of these in the molar region. The most common primary sources of metastatic tumours found in the oral region are the lung, kidney and prostate gland for the males, and the breast, genital organs and kidneys for females.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare 2% lidocaine and 2% mepivacaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine for postoperative pain control.

Study Design: A group of 35 patients, both genders were recruited, whose had ages ranged from 13 to 27 years-old and had two inferior third molars in similar positions to be extracted. The cartridges were distributed to the patients according to a randomised pattern, where lidocaine was in the control group and mepivacaine in the experimental group.

Purpose: A comparative analysis was made of the relationship between impacted lower third molars and the mandibular canal by means of orthopantomography and conventional mandibular tomography. Consideration was given to the association between the existence or absence of a close relationship according to gender, age, and tooth involved, as well as the resolution of the mandibular canal tomograph of the mesial and distal roots.

Materials And Methods: The sample consisted of 19 patients of both genders with impacted third molars that exhibited a close relationship between impacted lower third molars and the mandibular canal on the orthopantomograph.
