Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of acute respiratory infection. In 2020, RSV was eliminated from New Zealand due to non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) used to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2. We have shown that sAPPalpha enhances long-term potentiation in vivo and can restore spatial memory in rats whose endogenous sAPPalpha production is impaired. These observations imply that the reduction of sAPPalpha levels seen in Alzheimer's disease, which occurs alongside increased levels of toxic amyloid-beta, may be aetiologically significant.
