Purpose: To assess the retinal microvasculature of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) patients using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA).

Methods: Twenty adult SLE patients without disease activity and no ocular manifestations were recruited and cross-sectionally assessed. A demographically similar cohort of healthy subjects was used for comparison.

Impulsive and compulsive behaviors are associated with inhibitory control deficits. Diet plays a pivotal role in normal development, impacting both physiology and behavior. However, the specific effects of a high-fat diet (HFD) on inhibitory control have not received adequate attention.

Metabolomic profiling of COVID-19 using serum and urine samples in intensive care and medical ward cohorts.

The COVID-19 pandemic remains a significant global health threat, with uncertainties persisting regarding the factors determining whether individuals experience mild symptoms, severe conditions, or succumb to the disease. This study presents an NMR metabolomics-based approach, analysing 80 serum and urine samples from COVID-19 patients (34 intensive care patients and 46 hospitalized patients) and 32 from healthy controls. Our research identifies discriminant metabolites and clinical variables relevant to COVID-19 diagnosis and severity.

Purpose: To perform a multimodal assessment of refractive outcomes and quality of vision (QoV) in patients with high myopia submitted to multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.

Methods: Retrospective study that included consecutive eyes with high myopia (axial length [AL] >26.00mm) submitted to multifocal IOL implantation between January 2014 and February 2020.

Refractive Management of Surgical-Induced Presbyopia in a Young Patient with Vision-Related Quality of Life Complaints: A Case Report.

Visual difficulties can negatively impact life quality. Our purpose was to report the refractive surgical planning and outcomes of a young patient with mixed astigmatism and phacoemulsification-induced presbyopia due to congenital cataracts who was unsatisfied with her vision-related quality of life. A 32-year-old woman, submitted to phacoemulsification with implantation of a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) and Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy 3 years before, due to congenital cataracts, was referred to the Refractive Surgery Unit of Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Santo António.

Physiological and metabolomic responses of the ethylene insensitive squash mutant etr2b to drought.

The squash gain-of-function mutant etr2b disrupts the ethylene-binding domain of ethylene receptor CpETR2B, conferring partial ethylene insensitivity, changes in flower and fruit development, and enhanced salt tolerance. In this paper, we found that etr2b also confers a growth advantage as well as a physiological and metabolomic response that make the mutant better adapted to drought. Mutant plants had a higher root and leaf biomass than WT under both well-watered and drought conditions, but the reduction in growth parameters in response to drought was similar in WT and etr2b.

Comparison of Color Fundus Photography and Multicolor Fundus Imaging for Detection of Lesions in Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinal Vein Occlusion.

Purpose: To evaluate the agreement between conventional fundus photography (CFP) and multicolor fundus imaging (MFI) for the detection of lesions of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO).

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of eyes with DR or RVO who underwent CFP and MFI. All images were independently analyzed by two observers (O1 and O2), and the evaluated lesions were classified as "present" or "absent".

Retinal Changes After COVID-19 Infection and COVID-19 Vaccination.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease was first reported in 2019 and was initially associated with respiratory pathology. With the improvement of knowledge about this disease, it was noticed that, among other symptoms, some patients presented visual acuity changes associated with retinal vascular changes, mainly associated with thrombotic phenomena. Later, with the development of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 disease, cases of visual acuity alterations secondary to thrombotic phenomena were also reported.

ACUTE MACULAR NEURORETINOPATHY FOLLOWING SARS-CoV-2 VACCINATION.

Purpose: To report a case of acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination.

Methods: Case report.

Results: An otherwise healthy 28-year-old white woman presented to an ophthalmology department with complaints of black paracentral vision scotomata on both eyes that appeared 2 days after receiving the first dose of Vaxzevria vaccine.

Serum nuclear magnetic resonance metabolomics analysis of human metastatic colorectal cancer: Biomarkers and pathway analysis.

We describe the use of nuclear magnetic resonance metabolomics to analyze blood serum samples from healthy individuals (n = 26) and those with metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC; n = 57). The assessment, employing both linear and nonlinear multivariate data analysis techniques, revealed specific metabolite changes associated with metastatic CRC, including increased levels of lactate, glutamate, and pyruvate, and decreased levels of certain amino acids and total fatty acids. Biomarker ratios such as glutamate-to-glutamine and pyruvate-to-alanine were also found to be related to CRC.

Application of optical coherence tomography angiography for microvascular changes in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Retinal toxicity with long-term hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) treatment is a major concern. This systematic review aims to assess the application of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to detect microvascular alterations in patients under HCQ.

Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched until January 14, 2023.

Posterior Capsular Rupture during Cataract Surgery in Eyes Previously Treated with Intravitreal Injections.

Introduction: Intravitreal injections (IVIs) are currently the most common intraocular surgical procedure worldwide. Some studies have reported a higher risk of intraoperative complications, namely, posterior capsular rupture (PCR), during cataract surgery. The aim of this retrospective and observational study, conducted at Department of Ophthalmology, Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto, was to assess the risk of PCR during cataract surgery in eyes previously treated with IVIs with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) and/or corticosteroids.

Quality of Vision After LASIK, PRK and FemtoLASIK: An Analysis Using the Double Pass Imaging System HD AnalyzerTM.

Purpose: Analyze and compare the quality of vision of Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), LASER in situ keratomileusis with mechanical microkeratome (LASIK) and femtosecond-assisted LASIK (FS-LASIK) using the double-pass imaging system HD AnalyzerTM.

The Isolation of Specialty Compounds from Biomass by Two-Step Solid-Phase and Liquid-Liquid Extraction.

The two main methods for partitioning crude methanolic extract from biomass were compared. The objective was to obtain three enriched fractions containing amphidinols (APDs), carotenoids, and fatty acids. Since the most valuable bioproducts are APDs, their recovery was the principal goal.

Long-Term Effect of Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (Anti-VEGF) Injections in Choroidal Neovascularization Secondary to Angioid Streaks.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections in the treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) associated with angioid streaks.

Methods: Multicenter retrospective cohort study, including eyes with CNV secondary to angioid streaks treated with anti-VEGF injections, were performed. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in ETDRS letters; qualitative and quantitative (foveal thickness) OCT parameters; anti-VEGF type; and number of injections were collected at baseline and at 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 months.

Sleep disturbances, circadian activity, and nocturnal light exposure characterize high risk for and current depression in adolescence.

Study Objectives: Major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescence is associated with irregularities in circadian rhythms and sleep. The characterization of such impairment may be critical to design effective interventions to prevent development of depression among adolescents. This study aimed to examine self-reported and actimetry-based circadian rhythms and sleep-wake behavior associated with current MDD and high risk (HR) for MDD among adolescents.

Refractive Surgery for Older Children and Adults with Accommodative Esotropia: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Accommodative esotropia (AET) is characterized by an esodeviation of the eyes due to uncorrected hyperopia, deficient fusional divergence, or high accommodative convergence. Decreasing hyperopia would reduce accommodative convergence and strabismus. We sought to review the existing evidence regarding the outcomes of refractive surgery in patients with AET.

Long-term results in patients with iris-fixated foldable phakic intraocular lenses for myopia and astigmatism.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term results of iris-fixated foldable phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation for the management of myopia and astigmatism.

NMR-based Metabolomics and Fatty Acid Profiles to Unravel Biomarkers in Preclinical Animal Models of Compulsive Behavior.

Compulsivity is a key manifestation of inhibitory control deficit and a cardinal symptom of psychopathological conditions such as obsessive-compulsive and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders, in which metabolic alterations have raised attention as putative biomarkers for early identification. The present study assessed the metabolic profile in a preclinical model of a compulsive phenotype of rats. We used the schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP) method to classify male Wistar rats into high drinkers (HDs) or low drinkers (LDs) according to their compulsive drinking rate developed by exposure to a fixed-time 60 s (FT-60) schedule of reinforcement with water available during 20 sessions.

Evaluation of ORAC, IR and NMR metabolomics for predicting ripening stage and variety in melon (Cucumis melo L.).

A combination of FTIR- and NMR-based metabolomics approaches coupled to multivariate data analysis techniques was used for the first time to characterize and explore the metabolic changes along the ripening of two Spanish melon landraces (Jimbee N and Jimbee XL). Furthermore, the fatty acids profile and the antioxidant capacity were investigated by GC-FID and ORAC method, respectively. Despite FTIR was able to identify changes in the sugars content between fruits of different maturity stages, it failed to discriminate between both varieties, being exceeded by NMR in both situations.
