The extracellular matrix surrounding the tumor undergoes changes in its organization during the metastasis process. The present study aims to quantify total collagen, collagen I (Col I) and collagen III (Col III), analyze the alignment of collagen fibers and assess the basement membrane integrity in samples from patients with metastatic and non-metastatic prostate cancer. Tissue samples from 60 patients were classified into groups based on prognostic parameters: better prognosis (n = 20), worse prognosis without metastasis (n = 23) and metastatic (n = 17).

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the malignant neoplasm that most commonly affects men and is an important cause of death. It can be detected by changes in serum levels of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and digital rectal examination, but often symptoms do not appear until advanced stages and metastases. The C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 12/C-X-C Motif Chemokine Receptor 4 (CXCL12/CXCR4) axis acts in cell migration and may be involved in the metastatic process.

Uruguay is one of the few countries in the Americas that successfully contained the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) epidemic during the first half of 2020. Nevertheless, the intensive human mobility across the dry border with Brazil is a major challenge for public health authorities. We aimed to investigate the origin of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) strains detected in Uruguayan localities bordering Brazil as well as to measure the viral flux across this ∼1,100 km uninterrupted dry frontier.

A 37-year-old healthcare worker from the northeastern region of Brazil experienced 2 clinical episodes of coronavirus disease. Infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 was confirmed by reverse transcription PCR in samples collected 116 days apart. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that the 2 infections were caused by the most prevalent lineage in Brazil, B.

A configurational bias Monte Carlo method has been developed to study the static friction between grafted polymers immersed in a good solvent. Simple models using the soft quadratic potential from a dissipative particle dynamics study have been used to model polyzwitterionic brushes at physiological pressures (up to 7.5 MPa).

Mesoscopic simulations of star polymer melts adsorbed onto solid surfaces are performed using the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method. A set of parameters is developed to study the low functionality star polymers under shear. The use of a new bond-angle potential between the arms of the star creates more rigid chains and discriminates between different functionalities at equilibrium, but still allows the polymers to deform appropriately under shear.

Background: There are limited data on the risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS). This retrospective cohort study aimed to develop a predictive model for CKD progression in children with INS.

Methods: Between 1970 and 2012, a total of 294 patients with INS were followed up.

Background: Data regarding Hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV) prevalence among military personnel in Brazil are lacking, but the work-related risk of exposure can be high. The objective of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of HBV and HCV and the risk factors associated to HBV exposure among Brazilian military personnel.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted and included 433 male military adults aged 18-25 years old working in Rio de Janeiro during October 2013.

We report nonequilibrium molecular dynamics of ionic liquids interacting with metallic surfaces. A specific set of interaction parameters for ionic liquids composed of alkylammonium cations and alkylsulfonate anions with an iron surface, which has been previously developed (J. Chem.

There is a growing interest in the development of new medical diagnostic tools with higher sensibility and less damage for the patient body, namely on imaging reporters for the management of diseases and optimization of treatment strategies. This article examines the properties of a new class of lanthanide complexes with a tripodal tris-3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone (tris-3,4-HOPO) ligand - NTP(PrHP)(3). Among the studies herein performed, major relevance is given to the thermodynamic stability of the complexes with a series of Ln(3+) ions (Ln = La, Pr, Gd, Er, Lu) and to the magnetic relaxation properties of the Gd(3+) complex.

An atomistic force field for ionic liquids interacting with a metal surface is built on the basis of quantum methods. Density functional calculations of alkylammonium cations and alkylsulfonate anions interacting with a cluster of iron atoms were performed, at a series of distances and orientations, using the M06 functional that represents noncovalent interactions. A site-site potential function was then adjusted to the BSSE-corrected DFT interaction energies.

The gallium(III) complex of a new tripodal 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone (3,4-HP) chelator has been studied in terms of its physico-chemical and in vivo properties aimed at potential application as probe for nuclear imaging. In particular, based on spectrophotometric titrations, the hexa-coordinated (1:1) gallium complex appeared as the major species in a wide physiological acid-neutral pH range and its high stability (pGa=27.5) should avoid drug-induced toxicity resulting from Ga(III) accumulation in tissues due to processes of transmetallation with endogenenous ligands or demetallation.
