The present work describes and illustrates in detail the six zoeal stages of Albunea paretii collected from plankton samples on the Amazon continental shelf in Brazil. The morphological characters are compared with those of other known albuneid larvae. As in other albuneids, the zoeae of Albunea paretii have a semi-globose carapace, a long rostral spine and a pair of long posterolateral spines on pereon, as well as three aesthetascs on the antennule of zoea I, a strong antennal spinous process and a convex telson with a stout posterolateral spine.

In this study, we synthesize glass-ceramics of the new NaGe(SiO)(PO) NASICON (Na super-ionic conductor) series to evaluate the effect of Si/P substitution on the structural, microstructural, and electrical properties of the NaGe(PO) system. From X-ray diffraction, the presence of the NASICON phase is confirmed in all glass-ceramics. An expansion of the unit cell volume suggesting an increase in the bottleneck of the NASICON structure is also observed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of highly porous Biosilicate(®) scaffolds on bone healing in a tibial bone defect model in rats by means of histological evaluation (histopathological and immunohistochemistry analysis) of the bone callus and the systemic inflammatory response (immunoenzymatic assay). Eighty Wistar rats (12 weeks-old, weighing±300 g) were randomly divided into 2 groups (n=10 per experimental group, per time point): control group and Biosilicate® group (BG). The objective of this study was to perform an epidemiological survey to determine the areas at risk of visceral leishmaniasis through the detection and quantification of natural infection by Leishmania infantum in Lutzomyia longipalpis. After an introduction showing the growing interest in glasses and glass-ceramics as biomaterials used for bone healing, we describe a new biomaterial named Biosilicate. Biosilicate is the designation of a group of fully crystallized glass-ceramics of the Na₂O-CaO-SiO₂-P₂O₅ system. Several in vitro tests have shown that Biosilicate is a very active biomaterial and that the HCA layer is formed in less than 24 hours of exposure to "simulated body fluid" (SBF) solution.

The development of bioactive glass-ceramic materials has been a topic of great interest aiming at enhancing the mechanical strength of traditional bioactive scaffolds. In the present study, we test and demonstrate the use of Biosilicate glass-ceramic powder to fabricate bone scaffolds by the foam replica method. Scaffolds possessing the main requirements for use in bone tissue engineering (95% porosity, 200-500 m pore size) were successfully produced.

Chagas disease is caused by infection with the intracellular protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. At present, nifurtimox and benznidazole, both compounds developed empirically over four decades ago, represent the chemotherapeutic arsenal for treating this highly neglected disease. The respective contributions of the charge carrier concentration and mobility to the ionic conductivity in glasses remain an open question. In the present work we calculate these two parameters from conductivity data as a function of temperature below and above the glass transition temperature, T(g). The basic hypothesis assumes that ionic displacement results from the migration of cationic pairs formed by a partial dissociation, which is a temperature-activated process.
