- CT scans in Brazil's public healthcare system (SUS) have increased a lot from 2001 to 2011, especially a 17.5% rise from 2008 to 2011.
- Most scans are for the head, but there are more scans for the abdomen, pelvis, and chest over time.
- While more CT scans can help patients, there's a concern about unnecessary scans, especially for kids and young adults, which may raise cancer risk, so we need to be careful.
The Brazilian Institute of Radiation Protection and Dosimetry (IRD/CNEN) carried out quality assurance regulatory audits in Brazilian radiotherapy facilities from 1995 to 2007. In this work, the set of data collected from 195 radiotherapy facilities that use high-energy photon beams are analyzed. They include results from audits in linear electron accelerators and/or Co-60 units.
