Preventing cognitive decline via digital inclusion and virtual game management: an intervention study with older adults in the community.

Interventions that promote health must be studied and implemented to make the aging process be with quality of life. Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health conditions that compromise the quality of life on the elderly and it can cause damage to the autonomy and activities of daily life.

Maternal and neonatal factors related to prematurity.

Objective: To identify maternal and neonatal factors associated with prematurity in the municipality of Porto Alegre.

Method: This was a population-based case-control study. The cases were newborns under 37 weeks of gestation and the controls were newborns over 37 weeks.

Temporal evolution and spatial distribution of maternal death.

Objective: To analyze the temporal evolution of maternal mortality and its spatial distribution.

Methods: Ecological study with a sample made up of 845 maternal deaths in women between 10 and 49 years, registered from 1999 to 2008 in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil. Data were obtained from Information System on Mortality of Ministry of Health.

[Mothers' knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding].

This is a descriptive study, with a qualitative approach, aimed to identify the knowledge of puerperal women on exclusive breastfeeding. Data were collected between September-October 2011, through semi-structured interview. Thirteen puerperal women, interned in a rooming unit of a public institution in the city of Caxias do Sul-RS, participated in the study.

[Epidemiological profile of maternal deaths in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil: 2004-2007].

This study analyzed the epidemiological profile of maternal deaths that occurred from 2004 to 2007 in Rio Grande do Sul, by means of Maternal Mortality Rates and Specific Maternal Mortality Ratio. Data was obtained from the Health Information System database and 323 maternal deaths were identified. In order to analyze indicators, Poisson regression and statistical tests were carried out.

[Participatory training of prenatal care professionals for breastfeeding promotion].

The commitment with the promotion and support of breastfeeding justified the training of professionals that give prenatal care in primary health. This is a exploratory, qualitative study, based on the assumptions of participant research. It aimed to identify the thematics about breastfeeding and report the actions and strategies proposed during the meetings.

[Care practices for neonates while setting up a neonatal unit in a university hospital].

The hospitalization process of neonates makes them vulnerable to several care practices. The aim of this study was to get to know the care practices adopted by health professionals while setting up a neonatal unit at the Hospital de Clínicas of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This is a qualitative study based on the New History Theory.

[Bottle feeding during the first month of life: determinants and effect on breastfeeding technique].

Objective: To assess incidence rate and determinants of bottle feeding during the first month of life, and its potential effects on breastfeeding technique.

Methods: A nested cross-sectional study was conducted in a contemporary cohort in the city of Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil, between June and November 2003. A total of 211 pairs of healthy mothers and infants were followed up for a month.

[Practices used by women at post-birth on nipple problems].

This is a qualitative study, of Convergent-assistential type, with the objective of knowing the women's practices at post-birth for the resolution of nipple problems, at home, and intervene to its resolution. Fourteen women at post-birth who were in the breastfeeding period and attended at a Center of Integral Attention to Health were participants. It was used a semi-structured interview, participant observation and notes in field diary, analised according to Trentini and Paim's proposal.

[The lay midwife care to woman upon delivery and her childbirth].

It is a research aimed at finding out the lay midwives' practices while attending women upon delivery and their childbirth. The methodology was supported by the oral history of the midwives, using Bardin's thematic analysis. The findings regarding the midwives' activities reveal the domestic character of their practices, being themselves one of these resources, besides others that they have adopted to perform their practices.

[Beliefs and practices of nursing mothers and of their families in relation to breastfeeding].

This is a qualitative study of the descriptive-exploratory kind that had the objective of finding out the beliefs and practices of nursing mothers and of their families in relation to breastfeeding. The research subjects were nine nursing mothers and eight relatives from a poor section of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews.

[The influence of breastfeeding technique on the frequencies of exclusive breastfeeding and nipple trauma in the first month of lactation].

Objective: To investigate the influence of breastfeeding technique on the frequencies of exclusive breastfeeding and nipple trauma in the first month of lactation.

Methods: We searched for unfavorable parameters of breastfeeding (five related to mother/baby positioning and three related to baby's latch on) in 211 mother-baby pairs in the maternity ward and at day 30, at home. We compared the frequencies of these parameters between mothers practicing or not exclusive breastfeeding at days 7 and 30, and between mothers with or without nipple trauma at the hospital.

[Home delivery as voiced by women: a perspective at the light of humanization].

This paper is a descriptive exploratory study developed with the objective of getting acquainted with life experiences, preparation,feelings and motivations of women who have chosen home childbirth. The subjects of the research comprised ten women who had at least one experience of home childbirth in Porto Alegre, in the last five years. The data was gathered through semi-structured interviews, which were analyzed according to Minayo's proposal.

[Nursing procedure: a dimension of the communication with the newborn].

This article approaches the perceptions of the nursing staff about the procedure's role in communicating with the newborn. Such theme was identified in a qualitative, exploratory/descriptive study developed with the nursing staff of the neonatal unit of an University Hospital in Porto Alegre/RS. The article explores the procedure's implications to the caregiver and methodological aspects of the study.

[Rooming-in: the father's expectations regarding the care of his wife and child].

Qualitative research with convergent approach kind with an objective to know the father's expectations regarding their participation women's and children's care for the health staff in the rooming-in. Nine fathers participate in the sample at the obstetric hospitalization unit of a university hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The study finding showed his expectations and father's desire to stay together with his family and participate on that which is also his.

[The context of an emergency service: with the word, the user].

This article presents parts of a qualitative research of a "case-study" type. Through free observation, documents research and a non-structured interview the information was gathered. The purpose of this work was to become aware of the user's understanding of an emergency service, considering the environment and the way he/she was treated.

[Skin care in newborns].

This article is based on brief recent revision of the scientific literature about the care with the skin of the newborn. The text deals with the anatomo-physiology aspects of the skin culminating with the specific care of the skin of newborn in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Considering the highest risk of the pre-term newborn to acquire infections, a special nursing care is proposed regarding the skin function as a protective barrier of the organism.

[Breastfeeding and relactation - nurse's intervention].

The role of the nurse both in breastfeeding and in relactation is presented according to Leavell's and Clark's levels of prevention. The authors describe the subject the mother should be taught during pregnancy and after delivery; they emphasize the preparation of the breasts for breastfeeding, the measures to be taken in periods of crisis and of hypogalactia, the procedures for promotion of relactation.
