Perioperative Hyperspectral Imaging to Assess Mastectomy Skin Flap and DIEP Flap Perfusion in Immediate Autologous Breast Reconstruction: A Pilot Study.

Mastectomy skin flap necrosis (MSFN) and partial DIEP (deep inferior epigastric artery perforator) flap loss represent two frequently reported complications in immediate autologous breast reconstruction. These complications could be prevented when areas of insufficient tissue perfusion are detected intraoperatively. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a relatively novel, non-invasive imaging technique, which could be used to objectively assess tissue perfusion through analysis of tissue oxygenation patterns (StO%), near-infrared (NIR%), tissue hemoglobin (THI%), and tissue water (TWI%) perfusion indices.

Nicotine effect on inflammatory and growth factor responses in murine cutaneous wound healing.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of nicotine in an experimental mouse model of cutaneous injury and healing responses, during the inflammatory phase of repair. Nicotine injection in full-thickness excisional skin wounds minimally affected inflammatory mediators like TNF, IL-6 and IL-12 while it induced a down-regulation in the expression of growth factors like VEGF, PDGF, TGF-β1 and TGF-β2, and the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Analysis of wound closure rate indicated no significant differences between nicotine and saline injected controls.

Smoking in relation to age in aesthetic facial surgery.

Background: Smoking is a major cause of premature facial aging. Skin aging in general, often accompanied by wrinkling and furrowing, plays a significant role in the decision to undergo aesthetic surgery. Smoking may therefore be related to the demand for cosmetic surgery.

A comparison between laser-doppler imaging and colorimetry in the assessment of scarring: "a pilot study".

Background: This cross-sectional pilot-study investigated the reproducibility of the LDI (Moor-LDI-B2; Moor Instruments) and the chromameter (Minolta chromameter CR-300) when used in scar assessment.

Methods: Twenty-seven scars in 14 subjects were included between January and June 2003. One observer performed two times both measurements with 10 min apart.

The effect of triclosan-coated sutures in wound healing. A double blind randomised prospective pilot study.

Background: Wound infection and dehiscence are both major contributors to postoperative morbidity. One potential cause or co-factor is the use of suture material. A recently introduced subcutaneous suture is coated with triclosan (TC), an antiseptic drug.
