High Prevalence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza: A Virus in Vietnam's Live Bird Markets.

Background: In recent years, Vietnam has suffered multiple epizootics of influenza in poultry.

Methods: From 10 January 2019 to 26 April 2021, we employed a One Health influenza surveillance approach at live bird markets (LBMs) and swine farms in Northern Vietnam. When the COVID-19 pandemic permitted, each month, field teams collected oral secretion samples from poultry and pigs, animal facility bioaerosol and fecal samples, and animal worker nasal washes at 4 LBMs and 5 swine farms across 5 sites.

Radiofrequency catheter ablation for paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia in children: Insights on its safety and efficacy from a lower middle-income country.

Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) is a safe and effective treatment for paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia in adults. However, data on its use in children, particularly from low- and middle-income countries, are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of RFCA in children with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia from Vietnam.

Long-Term Epidemiology and Evolution of Swine Influenza Viruses, Vietnam.

Influenza A viruses are a One Health threat because they can spill over between host populations, including among humans, swine, and birds. Surveillance of swine influenza virus in Hanoi, Vietnam, during 2013-2019 revealed gene pool enrichment from imported swine from Asia and North America and showed long-term maintenance, persistence, and reassortment of virus lineages. Genome sequencing showed continuous enrichment of H1 and H3 diversity through repeat introduction of human virus variants and swine influenza viruses endemic in other countries.

An Alternative Approach for Selective Lung Ventilation.

Single lung ventilation (SLV) with the double lumen tube (DLT) has been an effective process for providing surgical exposure in the thoracic cavity and has been applied effectively in the operating room. SLV also aids in protecting a healthy lung from the ill effects of fluid from an unhealthy lung, which may be blood, lavage fluid, or malignant or purulent secretions. Ensure correct placement, which is required and confirmed by a fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB).

Nutritional Status, Refeeding Syndrome and Some Associated Factors of Patients at COVID-19 Hospital in Vietnam.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome is associated with COVID-19 and can result in reduced food intake, increased muscle catabolism, and electrolyte imbalance. Therefore COVID-19 patients are at high risk of being malnourished and of refeeding syndrome. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of malnutrition and refeeding syndrome (RS) among COVID-19 patients in Hanoi, Vietnam.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection in a Hippopotamus, Hanoi, Vietnam.

While investigating the death of a hippopotamus at a zoo in Hanoi, Vietnam, we isolated SARS-CoV-2 and sequenced the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase gene from different organs. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the SARS-CoV-2 strain was closely related to 3 human SARS-CoV-2 strains in Vietnam.

Substance Withdrawal-Associated Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy: A Review of the Literature.

To better understand Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a rare but life-threatening complication of acute substance withdrawal. A PubMed search was conducted to identify relevant case reports through 2021 using the medical subject headings , , OR AND OR . Case reports were included in the review if there was a diagnosis of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in the setting of withdrawal from substances of abuse.

Muir-Torre Syndrome: Abdominal Sebaceous Carcinoma.

A 56-year-old male with a past medical history of arachnoid cysts and with two previous brain operations and a ventriculoperitoneal shunt presented with a large left lower quadrant (LLQ) abdominal mass for one year, growing rapidly for the past three months. He endorsed pus and blood leaking from ulceration on the lateral underside of the mass, and a section of the mass ruptured with blood and pus draining out on the day of admission. He denied any fevers, chills, pain, or numbness in the mass or any history of similar masses.

Nutritional status and eating behavior of children with autism spectrum disorders in Vietnam: A case-control study.

Atypical eating behaviors and feeding issues are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study aims to evaluate the nutritional status and eating behavior of the ASD and typically developing groups. A case-control study was conducted from January to April 2019 in Nghe An, Vietnam.

Some metaheuristic algorithms for solving multiple cross-functional team selection problems.

We can find solutions to the team selection problem in many different areas. The problem solver needs to scan across a large array of available solutions during their search. This problem belongs to a class of combinatorial and NP-Hard problems that requires an efficient search algorithm to maintain the quality of solutions and a reasonable execution time.

Glimmers of hope in large carnivore recoveries.

In the face of an accelerating extinction crisis, scientists must draw insights from successful conservation interventions to uncover promising strategies for reversing broader declines. Here, we synthesize cases of recovery from a list of 362 species of large carnivores, ecologically important species that function as terminal consumers in many ecological contexts. Large carnivores represent critical conservation targets that have experienced historical declines as a result of direct exploitation and habitat loss.

Comparison of cytotoxic potency between freshly cultured and freshly thawed cytokine-induced killer cells from human umbilical cord blood.

Immune cell therapy has been incorporated into cancer therapy over the past few years. Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (Car-T cells) transplantation is a novel and promising therapy for cancer treatment and introduces a new age of immune cell therapy. However, the expensive nature of genetic modification procedures limits the accessibility of Car-T cells for cancer treatment.

Impact of COVID-19 on Patients with Cancer Receiving Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors.

Introduction: To evaluate the impact of Sars-Cov-2 infection on mortality and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) toxicity in patients with cancer receiving ICIs compared to those not receiving ICIs.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective matched cohort study of 25 patients receiving ICIs within 1 year of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) diagnosis between March 20, 2020, and June 3, 2020, at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Mass General Brigham. Cases were matched 1:1 with controls based on age, sex, and anticancer therapy within the prior 6 months.

Zoonotic Flavivirus Exposure in Peri-Urban and Suburban Pig-Keeping in Hanoi, Vietnam, and the Knowledge and Preventive Practices of Pig Farmers.

Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs), including those caused by flaviviruses, remain human health problems for developing and urbanizing economies. This cross-sectional study examined risks of flavivirus exposure through a survey regarding knowledge and practices of pig farmers, and serological analysis of pigs in peri-urban and suburban Hanoi city. A total of 636 pig sera from 179 pig farms in 4 districts, namely, Chuong My, Dan Phuong, Ha Dong, and Bac Tu Liem, were analyzed by a competitive ELISA designed for flavivirus antibody detection.

Characterization of Lumpy skin disease virus isolated from a giraffe in Vietnam.

While investigating a giraffe's death in a Vietnamese zoo, we successfully identified and isolated Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) from skin nodule biopsies and ruptured nodule wound swab samples. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolate obtained in this study was closely related to the previous Vietnamese and Chinese LSDV strains from cattle. This is the first report on the genome detection and isolation of LSDV in a diseased giraffe in Vietnam.

Spatiotemporal Analysis and Assessment of Risk Factors in Transmission of African Swine Fever Along the Major Pig Value Chain in Lao Cai Province, Vietnam.

African swine fever (ASF) is a contagious and lethal hemorrhagic disease with a case fatality rate approaching 100% in domestic pigs. The main objectives of this study were to describe the spatiotemporal analysis as well as to assess the potential risk factors along the pig value chain in Lao Cai province, Vietnam. A total of 925 outbreaks were reported from 2019 to 2020.

3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione suppresses LPS-induced proinflammatory responses in macrophages: potential involvement of antioxidant induction, NF-κB, and Nrf2.

Previously, we reported that 3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (D3T), an Nrf2 activator, acted as a potential chemoprotectant against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mortality in mice. In view of the critical involvement of macrophages in the pathogenesis of LPS-induced endotoxemia, in the present study, we investigated the protective effects of D3T on LPS-induced proinflammatory responses in cultured murine RAW 264.7 macrophage cell line and primary peritoneal macrophages and the potential involvement of antioxidant induction, NF-κB, and Nrf2.

Predator-prey interactions of terrestrial invertebrates are determined by predator body size and species identity.

Predator-prey interactions shape ecosystems and can help maintain biodiversity. However, for many of the earth's most biodiverse and abundant organisms, including terrestrial arthropods, these interactions are difficult or impossible to observe directly with traditional approaches. Based on previous theory, it is likely that predator-prey interactions for these organisms are shaped by a combination of predator traits, including body size and species-specific hunting strategies.

The Distribution and Composition of Vector Abundance in Hanoi City, Vietnam: Association with Livestock Keeping and Flavivirus Detection.

Background: Dengue virus and Japanese encephalitis virus are two common flaviviruses that are spread widely by and mosquitoes. Livestock keeping is vital for cities; however, it can pose the risk of increasing the mosquito population. Our study explored how livestock keeping in and around a large city is associated with the presence of mosquitoes and the risk of them spreading flaviviruses.
