Genome-wide association studies have identified thousands of variants that are associated with numerous phenotypes. One such variant, rs13266634, a nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphism in the solute carrier family 30 (zinc transporter) member eight gene, is associated with a 53% increase in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). We hypothesized that individuals with the protective allele against T2D would show a positive response to short-term and long-term resistance exercise.

There is a large degree of variability in the damage response of individuals to eccentric exercise, with higher responders at risk for potentially fatal rhabdomyolysis. We hypothesized that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) and its receptor chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) associate with the high degrees of variability in the muscle damage response.

Rosuvastatin twice weekly alone or added to other lipid-lowering medications decreased total cholesterol by 19%, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 26%, and triglycerides by 14% (p<0.01 for all).

We have previously demonstrated that the CK response to downhill walking is greater in statin compared to placebo treated subjects. This study examined the CK response to downhill walking in subjects treated with low and high dose of atorvastatin.

However, no CK standard exists because of the limited information available regarding exercise-induced CK elevation and renal function. This study determined the magnitude of CK elevation and the effect on renal function produced by exercise in a large subject group.
