Social and environmental determinants of health (SEDoH) are crucial for achieving a holistic understanding of patient health. In fact, geographic factors may have more influence on health outcomes than patients' genetics. Integrating SEDoH into the electronic health record (EHR), however, poses notable technical and compliance-related challenges.

Unlabelled: Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) or vaping associated lung injury (EVALI) cases have increased with the popularity of e-cigarettes in the mostly young, healthy population. Some common symptoms associated with EVALI include shortness of breath and chest pain, and the most common diagnostic imaging findings are organizing pneumonia and diffuse alveolar damage seen on computed tomography (CT). Pneumomediastinum is a known sequela of EVALI.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to report the midterm outcomes at 1 year in the expanded first-in-human experience with the transfemoral EVOQUE system (Edwards Lifesciences) for tricuspid regurgitation (TR).

Background: Untreated TR is associated with excess mortality and morbidity. The first-in-human experience with the EVOQUE tricuspid valve replacement system reported favorable 30-day outcomes with no mortality in a compassionate use population.

Clinical data networks that leverage large volumes of data in electronic health records (EHRs) are significant resources for research on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Data harmonization is a key challenge in seamless use of multisite EHRs for COVID-19 research. We developed a COVID-19 application ontology in the national Accrual to Clinical Trials (ACT) network that enables harmonization of data elements that are critical to COVID-19 research.

Background: The Fourth Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction (MI) differentiates MI from myocardial injury. We characterised the temporal course of cardiac and non-cardiac outcomes associated with MI, acute and chronic myocardial injury.

Methods: We included all patients presenting to public emergency departments in South Australia between June 2011-Sept 2019.

Acute myocardial infarction (MI) represents one of the most common hospital encounters, with significant short-term and long-term morbidity and mortality, and frequently occurs in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Cardiac troponin is an exquisitely sensitive biomarker for myocardial injury and plays an essential role in the diagnosis, risk-stratification, and management of MI. In 2017, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved Roche Diagnostics' 5 generation high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) for clinical use.

Objectives: To analyse the effect of the implementation of a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and multidisciplinary heart team programme on mortality in severe aortic stenosis (AS).

Methods: A retrospective, observational cohort study was performed using the echocardiography, cardiothoracic surgery and TAVR databases between 1 January 2006 and 31 December 2016. Outcomes were compared between the pre- and post-TAVR programme eras in a tertiary referral centre providing transcatheter and surgical interventions for AS.

Background: Elevated troponin level findings among patients presenting with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or another intercurrent illness undeniably identifies patients at increased risk of mortality. Whilst enhancing our capacity to discriminate risk, the use of high-sensitivity troponin assays frequently identifies patients with myocardial injury (i.e.

Background: The aim of this study was to characterise the interaction between ACS- and non-ACS-risk on the benefits of invasive management in patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Methods: Consecutive patients admitted to a tertiary hospital's Cardiac Care Unit in the months of July-December, 2003-2011 with troponin elevation (>30 ng/L) were included. "ACS-specific-risk" was estimated using the GRACE score and "non-ACS-risk" was estimated using the Charlson-Comorbidity-Index (CCI).

Objective: Amiodarone, a class III antidysrhythmic agent, blocks Na+, Ca2+, and K+ channels as well as the beta-adrenergic receptor. Despite increased use of amiodarone for wide-complex tachycardia, its efficacy in the treatment of dysrhythmias induced by tricyclic antidepressants has not been tested. We investigated the effect of amiodarone and amitriptyline in a mouse lethality model.

Coccidioidomycosis is a disease caused by Coccidioides immitis, a soil-inhabiting fungus endemic to the desert climate of the southwestern United States and Central and South America. We report a case of disseminated coccidioidomycosis in a previously healthy person living in New York City, who was initially thought to have tuberculosis. The incidence of coccidioidomycosis has been increasing in both endemic and nonendemic areas, but diagnosis is often delayed or missed in nonendemic areas, resulting in extensive and unnecessary medical workup for other diseases or progression to serious disease.

The cyclopropane fatty acid synthase gene (cfa) of Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824 was cloned and overexpressed under the control of the clostridial ptb promoter. The function of the cfa gene was confirmed by complementation of an Escherichia coli cfa-deficient strain in terms of fatty acid composition and growth rate under solvent stress. Constructs expressing cfa were introduced into C.
