Background: In 2024, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Advisory Board on Pediatric Nutrition (KSA-ABPN) reviewed childhood undernutrition in the Middle East. We sought to foster efficient nutritional care for infants and children at nutritional risk. Severe malnutrition due to starvation is rare in Saudi Arabia, so we focused on early recognition and treatment of children with mild growth impairment that forewarns risk for further nutritional decline.

Veterinary medicine is an increasingly feminized field, with growing numbers of veterinary students and professionals identifying as women. Increased representation of women in senior veterinary education leadership has not yet been examined across all global regions. To address this question, we compiled a comprehensive list of veterinary academic executives from veterinary educational institutions listed by the World Veterinary Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the World Organisation for Animal Health.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aims to assess how effective drain fluid lipase is in predicting postoperative pancreatic fistula, a serious complication after pancreatic surgery, and determines the most suitable day for measuring this biomarker.
  • - Conducted across seven hospitals, the LIPAse DRAIN study analyzed drain fluid from 625 patients over six days, finding that drain fluid lipase is a reliable indicator on days 3 and 4, with significant statistical values suggesting its diagnostic utility.
  • - Results showed that on postoperative day 3, a specific threshold of lipase levels could reasonably identify patients at risk for developing a pancreatic fistula, recommending routine measurement of this biomarker by day 3 post-surgery.

Introduction: Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is becoming a public health issue with a 5-years survival rate around 10%. Patients with PDAC are often sarcopenic, which impacts postoperative outcome. At the same time, overweight population is increasing and adipose tissue promotes tumor related-inflammation.

This study focuses on the impact of negative fixed charge, achieved through fluorine (F) implantation, on breakdown voltage (BV) enhancement in vertical GaN Schottky diodes. Several device and implant-related parameters are examined using Synopsys Sentaurus TCAD simulations in order to determine the optimum fixed negative charge concentration required to achieve the highest BV. The simulated structure consisted of a Schottky diode with a box consisting of negative fixed charges to achieve the edge termination of the Schottky device.

Article Synopsis
  • Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for left pancreatic resections has been increasingly utilized, but its advantages over traditional open surgery for distal pancreatectomy in treating pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are still debated.
  • A retrospective study involving 274 patients across 21 French centers analyzed short and long-term outcomes of MIS versus open surgery, focusing on factors like tumor size and patient characteristics.
  • Results showed that MIS reduced major complications and delayed gastric emptying while maintaining comparable survival rates, suggesting it is a safe option for patients with resectable left pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.

Background: Adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) improves the prognosis after pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) resection. However, previous studies have shown that a large proportion of patients do not receive or complete AC. This national study examined the risk factors for the omission or interruption of AC.

Background & Objectives: Sarcopenia is a morbi-mortality risk factor in digestive surgery, though its impact after major hepatectomy (MH) remains unknown. This prospective pilot study investigated whether volume and function of a regenerating liver is influenced by body composition.

Methods: From 2011 to 2016, 125 consecutive patients had computed tomography and 99mTc-labelled-mebrofenin SPECT-scintigraphy before and after MH at day 7 and 1 month for measurements of liver volumes and functions.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease for which new targeted therapies are currently available. Due to the increased rates of ocular surface disease (OSD) reported during treatment with these new targeted treatments, more insight into the occurrence and pathomechanism of OSD in moderate-to-severe AD patients is needed. Therefore, this review's first part highlights that most patients with moderate-to-severe AD already have characteristics of OSD before starting targeted treatment.

The presence of a pre-existing or recent extra-hepatic solid tumor was considered for a long time as an absolute contraindication to liver transplantation, by fear of futility with an unacceptable increase in non-liver-related mortality. However, cancer-related mortality in solid malignancies is heterogeneous, and experts suggest that case-by-case multidisciplinary decisions should be made. Here, we report the cases of 3 patients with favorable oncological and liver outcome in patients with renal cell carcinoma detected during pre-transplant evaluation that nonetheless underwent liver transplantation.

Background: Accurate measurement of emicizumab in the presence of factor (F) VIII is required in patients with severe hemophilia A treated with emicizumab, as well as additional need for FVIII substitution or emicizumab prophylaxis in patients with acquired or moderate to mild hemophilia A. However, the presence of FVIII potentially biases the results.

Objectives: To assess the impact of plasma FVIII activity on determined emicizumab levels and evaluate different strategies for correction for or preanalytical inhibition of FVIII.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), such as infliximab, are important treatment options for different diseases. Immunogenicity is a major risk, resulting in anti-drug antibodies (ADAs), being associated with adverse events and loss of response, influencing long-term outcomes. The development of ADAs against infliximab is primarily measured by immunoassays like radioimmunoassay (RIA).

Background: Liver resection and local ablation are the only curative treatment for non-cirrhotic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Few data exist concerning the prognosis of patients resected for non-cirrhotic HCC. The objectives of this study were to determine the prognostic factors of recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) and to develop a prognostication algorithm for non-cirrhotic HCC.
