Functional tumor-specific CD8+ T cells are essential for an effective anti-tumor immune response and the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy. In comparison to other organ sites, we found higher numbers of tumor-specific CD8+ T cells in primary, metastatic liver tumors in murine tumor models. Despite their abundance, CD8+ T cells in the liver displayed an exhausted phenotype.

Background: Paediatric patients frequently encounter medication errors caused by the requirement for individualised drug dose estimates based on weight, age variance, and drug pharmacokinetics. One thing contributing to drug dosing errors is the lack of healthcare personnel's knowledge of paediatric drug dosing. The present study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and perception regarding the workshop on paediatric drug dosing among undergraduate pharmacy students.

Article Synopsis
  • Liver cancer is one of the most lethal cancers, and this study explores the role of the vagus nerve in tumor progression by regulating immune responses through acetylcholine (ACh).
  • Liver denervation showed a significant reduction in liver tumors, while increasing parasympathetic activity led to tumor growth, indicating a complex relationship between cholinergic signals and adaptive immunity.
  • The findings reveal that gut bacteria can affect both behavior and liver anti-tumor immunity through interactions with the vagus nerve, suggesting potential for new treatment targets.

Article Synopsis
  • Liver metastases often resist immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy, and regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the liver may contribute to this resistance, but their specific role is not well understood.* -
  • The study utilized flow cytometry and RNA sequencing to analyze the behavior of hepatic Tregs, revealing a unique population that grows significantly in response to ICI treatment, regardless of tumor presence.* -
  • The findings suggest that a specific subpopulation of CD29 Tregs in the liver is crucial for the enhanced suppression and resistance to ICI therapy, indicating their potential as targets for improving treatment outcomes.*

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells represent an abundant innate-like T cell subtype in the human liver. MAIT cells are assigned crucial roles in regulating immunity and inflammation, yet their role in liver cancer remains elusive. Here, we present a MAIT cell-centered profiling of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using scRNA-seq, flow cytometry, and co-detection by indexing (CODEX) imaging of paired patient samples.

Objective: This study aimed to see if increasing the concentration of nutmeg flesh extract could increase the growth of bacteria and if it had any effect on broiler chicken performance.

Materials And Methods: Different concentrations of nutmeg flesh extract (5, 10, 15, and 20/100 ml distilled water) were combined with 10 ml (bacterial concentration 1 × 10 cfu/ml) to produce synbiotics. A total of 250 unsexed Lohmann broiler chickens were reared together from 0 to 7 days of age in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • Microplastics, specifically Polystyrene microplastics, have been shown to negatively affect reproductive health in animals and humans, potentially increasing infertility risks.
  • In a study with prepubertal female rats, Kelulut honey was administered alongside PS-MPs, leading to significant improvements in uterine structure and function, including thicker epithelial layers and normalized hormone levels.
  • The findings suggest that Kelulut honey has protective effects against the uterine toxicity induced by microplastics, highlighting its potential as a natural remedy for reproductive health issues.

Background: In Singapore, research teams seek informed patient consent on an ad hoc basis for specific clinical studies and there is typically a role separation between operational and research staff. With the enactment of the Human Biomedical Research Act, there is increased emphasis on compliance with consent-taking processes and research documentation. To optimize resource use and facilitate long-term research sustainability at our institution, this study aimed to design and pilot an institution level informed consent workflow (the "intervention") that is integrated with clinic operations.

In the last few decades, microplastics (MPs) have been among the emerging environmental pollutants that have received serious attention from scientists and the general population due to their wide range of potentially harmful effects on living organisms. MPs may originate from primary sources (micro-sized plastics manufactured on purpose) and secondary sources (breakdown of large plastic items through physical, chemical, and biological processes). Consequently, serious concerns are escalating because MPs can be easily disseminated and contaminate environments, including terrestrial, air, groundwater, marine, and freshwater systems.

It is unknown if simultaneous stimulation of the respiratory and locomotor muscle afferents via inspiratory loading (IL) and locomotor subsystolic cuff inflation (CUFF) influences the cardiovascular responses during exercise. We hypothesized that combined IL and CUFF (IL + CUFF) will result in greater increases in blood pressure (MAP) and systemic vascular resistance (SVR) than IL and CUFF alone during exercise. Eight adults (6 males/2 females) were enrolled and performed four 10-min bouts of constant-load cycling eliciting 40% maximal oxygen uptake on a single day.
