The influence of metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) on taste preferences and the pleasurable aspects of appetite may be mediated through its effects on gut hormones, potentially affecting weight loss results. Research indicates that the nature of the MBS performed significantly impacts food cravings in the year following the procedure, with no clear relationship to psychological factors or pre-surgery eating behaviors. During the period from August 2021 to August 2022, a group of adult patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 kg/m or above, or 35 kg/m or above with obesity-related medical complications, underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), or sleeve gastrectomy (SG) at a tertiary academic center focused on MBS.

Life-threatening bilateral internal carotid artery and unilateral vertebral artery total occlusion presenting with dizziness: a case report.

Introduction: It is well known that whereas bilateral occlusion is less common, unilateral internal carotid artery blockage happens regularly. Asymptomatic to fatal ischemic stroke can be the clinical presentation, depending on whether there is adequate collateral blood flow. Internal carotid artery occlusion is often associated with significant neurologic events, both at the time of initial occlusion and during follow-up.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Presenting as Cardiac Tamponade and Pleural Effusion: A Case Report.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect the heart, lungs, and other organs. We describe the case of a 36-year-old female patient who first presented with non-specific symptoms before receiving a diagnosis of SLE, along with initial evidence of pleural effusion and cardiac tamponade. Heart tamponade, which is characterized by fluid accumulation in the pericardial space, is an unusual but serious side effect of SLE.

A systematic review on laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy for difficult gallbladders: a lifesaving bailout or an incomplete operation?

Introduction: Laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy (LSTC) is a bailout procedure that is undertaken when it is not safe to proceed with a laparoscopic total cholecystectomy owing to dense adhesions in Calot's triangle. The main aim of this review was to investigate the early (≤30 days) and late (>30 days) morbidity and mortality of LSTC.

Methods: A literature search of the PubMed (MEDLINE), Google Scholar™ and Embase databases was conducted to identify all studies on LSTC published between 1985 and December 2020.

Massive hemoptysis as a sole presentation of left atrial myxoma.

Diagnosis of myxoma can be difficult given its variable presentation and while adopting common sense in diagnosing this condition, physicians should also be aware of atypical presentations. Herein we present a 47-year-old heavy smoker presented with massive blood-stained expectoration. He was later diagnosed with cardiac myxoma and managed accordingly.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune inflammatory condition affecting the central nervous system (CNS). A systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines was performed to explore the effect of metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) on the clinical course and outcomes in patients with multiple sclerosis. Eleven articles examining 394 patients were included in the final analysis.

Background: The ward round is an integral part of everyday surgical practice. It is a complex clinical activity that requires both sound clinical management and communication skills. This study reports the results of a consensus-building exercise on the common aspects of the general surgical ward rounds.

It has been reported that there is a strong association between SG and the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Barrett's esophagus (BE). This study was conducted to evaluate esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) findings in patients with a history of SG with more than 5-year follow-up.

Background: Laparoscopic surgery has almost replaced open surgery in many areas of Gastro-Intestinal (GI) surgery. There is currently no published expert consensus statement on the principles of laparoscopic GI surgery. This may have affected the training of new surgeons.

This systematic review intends to evaluate incidence and symptoms of post-bariatric splenic complications as well as best available modalities establishing the diagnosis and management protocols. A systematic literature search was performed in electronic database until March 2022. A total of 41 articles were included on the subject of splenic complications following bariatric/metabolic surgery (BMS).

We present the case of 45-year-old male patient who presented with penile strangulation after applying a metallic ring. Strangulation of the external male genitalia is a serious problem that requires urgent intervention in order to avoid serious complications.

Impact of short term oral steroid use for intravenous contrast media hypersensitivity prophylaxis in diabetic patients undergoing nonemergent coronary angiography or interventions.

Objectives: Oral steroids are routinely administered in the United States for prophylaxis of iodinated contrast media hypersensitivity (ICMH). We studied the impact of short-term steroid use in diabetic patients with ICMH undergoing nonemergent coronary angiography.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed records of diabetic patients with and without ICMH who underwent nonemergent coronary angiography at our center.

A Rare Case of Sudden Death in a Patient with Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy Secondary to Cardiac Rupture.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM), also known as broken heart syndrome or stress-induced cardiomyopathy, is a rare condition with an estimated incidence of 0.02% of all hospitalizations in United States and 2% of all acute coronary syndrome presentations. TCM predominately presents as a transient wall motion abnormality of the left ventricular apex due to emotional or physical stress.

Acute cardiac tamponade secondary to ruptured pericardial cyst: Case report and literature review.

Pericardial cysts are a rare disorder with an incidence of about 1 in 100,000, the majority of which are benign and incidentally identified. Pericardial cyst causing cardiac tamponade is an extremely rare phenomenon. The exact incidence of cardiac tamponade secondary to pericardial cyst is unknown.

De Garengeot's hernia: an unusual case on call.

De Garengeot's hernia is defined as a femoral hernia that contains the appendix. Owing to the extreme rarity of de Garengeot's hernia, it could represent a diagnostic challenge; however, it should remain in the differential diagnosis, particularly in this patient demographic. A female patient aged 96 years, who presented as an emergency with acute right iliac fossa pain, was found to have de Garengeot's hernia.

Systematic evaluation of radiological findings in the assessment of resectability of peri-ampullary cancer by CT using different contrast phase protocols.

Aims: To determine the relative significance of radiological signs in determining the resectability of peri-ampullary cancer (PC) and to assess the value of multi-phase imaging in detecting these findings.

Purpose: Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) requires utilizing multiple venous femoral sheaths in conjunction with aggressive periprocedural anticoagulation, which can lead to increased risk of vascular access complications. The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the "figure-of-eight" ("F-8") suture technique for femoral venous hemostasis while on therapeutic doses of intravenous anticoagulation at the time of sheath removal.

Methods: In this case-control analysis, 376 consecutive patients underwent AF ablation while on uninterrupted oral anticoagulation and received intraprocedural heparin.

Management and outcomes of appendicular neuroendocrine tumours: Retrospective review with 5-year follow-up.

Background: Neuroendocrine (NEN) tumours are the commonest type of tumours affecting the appendix. The majority of cases are diagnosed incidentally on post-operative histopathological examination of the resected appendicectomy specimen. Preoperative diagnosis remains a challenge, unless the patient presents with obvious features of carcinoid syndrome or signs of metastatic disease.

Polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type II is a well-identified disease characterized by the occurrence of autoimmune Addison's disease in combination with autoimmune thyroid disease and/or type 1 diabetes mellitus.
